Drought has caused poor foraging and little available water for Montana’s elk. Consequently, the animals have moved down from the higher elevations and are finding good food on green cultivated crops.
Officials have decided that for anyone holding an elk permit for hunt area 58 near Cody, they can begin hunting elk on October 5, instead of the usual November 1 opening.
The hope and intent of an earlier opening is that hunters will break up the large groups of elk and force them out of the croplands.
