Tumor Infested Deer

Tom, this is really something. Do you know where this picture was taken? I worked with cattle in feedlots out west. Tumors were at times a way of life for us. That many on a deer is unheard of.

Sorry! I really don’t know anything about the picture – where it was taken, when, by whom or whether the deer is wild or domesticated.

My mother-in-law and myself were driving yesterday in the Callander (near North Bay) Ontario area and came across a deer that looked similar to this. It was standing on the side of the road, and did not flee for a minute or so as we approached so we got a good look at it (unfortunately did not have a camera with us). She was covered with large black sacks hanging from her face and neck, all over her torso, and when she finally turned to run,we saw they were hanging from the backs of her legs and her rear. Both of us were in shock as deer are a common site in the area, but neither of us have ever seen anything like this! I was trying to do my own research online today and came across this picture. It is very similar to what we saw and I was wondering if it is a case that should be reported to the Ministry of Natural Resources, or is it a condition that is not threatening to other deer in the area?

That’s a good question and one I guess I don’t have perhaps the right answer for. My inclination would be to call the game officials and report it. They may or may not be aware of the condition of this one deer.
I don’t know much of anything about the deer but have been told the tumors are not something that will spread to other deer and that these tumors are somewhat common but not to this degree.
In this case it appears perhaps the deer will not be able to eat and will eventually starve to death.
If you find out any more, I sure would like to know. Thanks.

From what I have read online, I have found the same information – that it does not appear to be contagious. I will report it though. Thank you very much.
