Between October 1, 2006 and December 31, 2006, Morris County, New Jersey cleaned up 581 dead deer carcasses from county and municipal roads. Last year the state notified the counties they would no longer fund or clean up dead deer from county and municipal roads. Now it seems clear that county officials are better realizing what the state had to do and the costs associated with it.
581 deer killed by automobiles in one county on just county and local roads seems like a lot of deer. It also seems to me that something different could be done to reduce those numbers for several reasons. The first being the safety of the people driving the highways, second the cost of property damage and third, it’s a tough way for a deer to go out.
