Jim Zumbo Apologizes

You may have accepted Zumbo’s apology, but many of us have not. I’m certain he’s sorry he posted that piece, but I’m also certain he meant it. He didn’t apologize for what he said, he apologized for saying it out loud. Now Remington has dropped its sponsorship of him, and I suspect others will as well.

Perhaps the Brady Campaign and the American Hunters and Shooters Association can step into the breach.

Yes, he did apologize. I guess what gets me is the idea that he wrote his post without thinking about it. I write a blog for our company and I never write a post without thinking about the possible implications. Each post is thoughtfully considered and written and read before it is posted to the public.

I also find it hard to believe that Jim Zumbo has been a member of the NRA for 40+ years and wasn’t aware of the AR controversy. I’m aware of it, and I’m just starting to learn about hunting.

What makes me sad about all this is that it doesn’t just effect him. There are people employed by his television show and people employed at Outdoor Life who may also be hurt by the fallout from his incident. I guess this is a good lesson for all of us who write for public consumption. Think before you write!

He said it and he meant it. That’s the bottom line. I hope it cost him more than it does the rest of us. This is exactly what the “anti-gunners” want to hear, a well known hunter saying “Nobody needs these rifles except a “terrorist”.
Personally I’m not accepting his apology.

I think this will cause politicians to take a second look at any, and I mean ANY, anti-gun laws. We can’t be a divided house and stay standing. This Zumbo controversy has shown that we can stand together. I one believes the anti-gun crowd only wants to ban certain guns, then you believed Bill Clinton when he mentioned duck hunting with his rifle, lol.
At the end of the day, the 2nd Amendment was not written to protect duck hunting.

I applaud Remington for dropping him and I have written them thanking them for supporting us, the shooting public. Remington is not Ruger.

Hi Mountain Jerky severed all ties.
He resigned (fired) from Outdoor Life.
OLN has pulled his show from their programming.

Good riddence to a complete fool who supposedly “speaks for the common man”.

Jim Zumbo has made an error. Jim Zumbo has apologized. I for one accept the apology and say as Jesus said; “Go and sin no more.”

I will not forsake Mr. Zumbo, nor any of his sponsors. Consider all the fine and great things which Mr. Zumbo and his sponsors and publishers have brought to the hunting fraternity (and quickly becoming a sorority, also.) I will still read his articles, wherever published and purchase his books.

Again, from the Good Book, “He that is without sin, let him first cast a stone…” I cannot cast a stone. Can you?

Let us show the world hunters are an understanding lot and have forgiveness in our hearts.

Give the guy a 2nd chance? Are you out of your mind? You have to be some tree hugging, gun hating freak if you think Zumbo needs another chance. Another chance for what? To spew more gun hate and then make money off the people who love guns. Go to Hell Carbone.

Wow. It is amazing how many people can negatively respond to an exercise in freedom of speech. Frankly, people who result to virulent personal attacks usually cannot conjure up any intelligent words to get their point of view across. Lambasting Zumbo’s viewpoints, a clear example of the 1st Amendment, while they vehemently declare the supremacy of the 2nd Amendment reeks of irony. Zumbo did not advocate a policy change and it is irrelevant to this argument whether there should be one or not. However, it is wrong that all of his sponsors abandoned him because of pressure from unreasonable and hateful readers. I feel that this is a clear example of a fringe group, assault weapon proponents, further alienating the public. Instead of entering into a thoughtful dialogue, this group has made themselves look like a bunch of zealots and the sponsors now look like they endorse the viewpoints of this group. It’s such a shame when mob rule denounces and penalizes free speech. I do not believe that a well-regulated militia needs AK-47′s. That’s what the armed forces are for, in case you forgot. READ THE CONSTITUTION SOMETIME!

Jim made a commit that hurt the little feeling of the assualt-rifle mob. Before you say he should NEVER be forgiven, (MIKE). Your telling me never F-up?!!!!!Yea right. Jim has done more good in his career, then you’ll do in hundred of your life times. Everyone deserves the second chance, and clarify his stand. We give the anti’s more ammo when we act like jackasses (shoot road signs, poor hunting ethics.to name a few), then with someone’s opinion. In America your ALLOWED to have one and NOT (according to the constitution) be crusified. And people such as the n.r.a , remington, outdoor life can’t forgive Jim, discuss with him the err of his comment. Then their no better then the anti’s, cause that how they act.

Assault On Jim Zumbo
I first saw a display of assault-style rifles at the SHOT Show during the 1980s and was filled with a sickening sense that the arms industry was hastening their own demise by trying to expand their markets beyond hunters and target shooters. Such military style weapons have little appeal to hunters or target shooters, but great appeal to an element of the population with questionable motives and desires. Of course, not everyone who finds the dangerous and macho appearance of these weapons appealing have questionable motives and desires, but as the news continually displays, they are the weapons of choice for people of questionable intent, and ethical gun owners become guilty by association.
I believe most pragmatic hunters and target shooters feel this way, but they are afraid to voice their views for fear of political repercussions within their own ranks, or they are afraid that if they don’t fiercely defend everyone’s right to own any kind of weapon they want, that uninformed gun-control advocates will take their Weatherbys rifles and Remington semi-auto shotguns away. But, where do we draw the line: surface-to-air missiles for squirrel hunting?
I saw assault-style rifles then, and see them now, as the biggest assault (pun intended) upon our Second Amendment rights and the best ammunition (pun intended) gun control advocates have ever received.
Jim Zumbo has devoted his entire life to hunting and responsible gun ownership. He is hardly “uninformed” on these issues, and even though I don’t agree with everything he said, I applaud him for the general tone of his brave comments. If nothing else, it certainly opened a long-overdue dialog on this subject.
I am disappointed that Outdoor Life and Remington caved to political pressures from short-sighted or greedy interests. And now I’m disappointed with Jim Zumbo for doing the same. I guess he’s not as brave as I thought. It, indeed, appears that Rambo rules with emotional aggression and violent force.
I think we make a big mistake if we put assault-style rifles on a flag and wave it as the emblem of gun ownership in America.

The worst thing about all this is not so much what Zumbo wrote, but the firestorm it has created. I believe it indicates a growing division between traditional hunters and the “gun owners” you point out.
It is this division that weakens our defense of the right to bear arms. A group is easily defeated while they are fighting among themselves. This is what I sensed would one day come when I first saw assault-style rifles at the SHOT Show.
I believe traditional hunters are the “silent majority” in this issue. But I’m old enough that I don’t care about being politically correct, and I’m poor enough that I don’t fear monetary reprisals for my opinions.
Unlike Zumbo, I do not advocate an further controls on assault weapons, nor do I stereotype owners of these weapons as “terrorists.” The vast majority are fine, responsible citizens. But the most vocal and aggressive attacks on Zumbo that I’ve found are on sites with avatars of menacing looking men with leather masks. This is the increasingly pervasive image of assault-style weapons that is as damaging to conscientious owners of these weapons as actual terrorists are to the peaceful Muslim faithful.
This lunatic fringe is your real enemy, not Zumbo.

Clearly Mr. Kruger has no clue what he is talking about. The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting and/or target shooting. He is clearly uninformed.

I have no idea what sites he frequents featuring images of “leather clad macho men”. These do not sound like firearm related sites or discussion boards.

Given Mr. Kruger’s irrational fear of what he calls “assault-style weapons” I think his opinion on the subject has been clouded.

look at how many dead bodys the civil war gave us. they where shot with single shot guns. they where just as assulted as if they were on the killing end of a gun shooting 35 or 40 rounds.
guns are just steel and wood with no brains they can’t shoot them selfves they need help. thats where the human element comes in. then you have problems
some of us have no reason to use guns other than for sport.
some use them for reasons that we dont agree with.
The people are the problem not the guns.
