On Friday, U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, D – Colorado, introduced a bill in Congress that would give Rocky Mountain National Park the authority it needs to allow public hunts within the park to thin a bulging elk herd that is threatening park resources and damaging property. Last year the park announced it wanted to reduce elk numbers by using park employees and sharpshooters costing taxpayers in excess of $18 million.
The bill is not a bill that will open all national parks up for hunting, unfortunately, but will focus only on the needs of RMNP.
