Today in a vote of 24 – 9, Idaho Senate lawmakers approved an elk industry supported bill that would require elk farmers to be licensed. Licensing includes fees for inspection and a levy of $5.00 per head. If approved by the House, the bill would give the Department of Agriculture the authority to revoke a license from a ranch that does not comply.

Although this bill was supported by the elk breeders in general, not everyone agreed with the prospects of licensing, as no other industry governed by the AG is required to be licensed.

The Senate approved bill now moves to the House for debate.
