Wyoming Elk Census Looks Good For Hunters

I find it interesting that the elk-hunter success rate in Idaho in 2006 was just above 19 percent, while our immediate neighbor to the east (Wyoming) had a success rate of more than 38 percent. I’m curious to see the success rate of our neighbor state to the north and east (Montana).

According to an elk report on the FWP website for Montana, the success rate for hunting elk in 2005 for residents was just slightly over 30%.

Of course it should be noted that Montana states that using success rates is only something for public curiosity and is not used in any way in the management of elk. (smirk)

There are so many factors that can have an effect on determining the success rate, that I’m not going to pretend that I know why there’s a difference but if all things are mostly relevant, in other words, the number of tags issued for the number of elk present, etc. etc., one would think that success rates wouldn’t vary so greatly.

Maybe Idaho hunters don’t know how to hunt elk. Ha Ha!
