In 1993 Vermont issued 30 moose permits and 25 moose were taken. Yesterday, 13,000 applicants vied for 1,250 permits and officials believe at least 700 moose will be taken from an estimated herd size of 5,000.
Vermont’s moose drawing is done as a random draw but bonus points can be added if you applied the previous year and didn’t get drawn. With a bonus point, your odds of getting selected were about 1 in 7. Without the bonus point, 1 in 15. Each resident applicant paid $10.00 and each non-resident coughed up $25.00.
Five moose permits are being auctioned off as a fund raiser for the Vermont Fish and Wildlife. Bids must be received by August 1, 2007.
