The family of Robin Kochorek is struggling to understand how she met her death at what appears to be the hands of a black bear. Yesterday I told you about the event with few details to go on. Today, there are still few details about the incident but members of Kochorek’s family say she was cautious and never made bad judgments.
Michael Kochorek said he’s shocked by the death of his younger sister who hiked and mountain biked in the area where their parents live her whole life and was always bear smart. “She wasn’t a risk taker,” he said. “My sister is a cautious and safe person.”
Kochorek was biking with friends and family and opted to take a less challenging run down the Panorama Ski Resort. They agreed to meet up at the bottom. When she didn’t show, the group reported her missing to resort authorities. Her body was found several hundred yards off the trail and outside the park boundary. This puzzles her brother.
He said the family is puzzled that her body was found Sunday morning 700 metres from a trail just outside the resort’s boundary. “If my sister did veer off trail it would have been to get away from the bear,” said Michael. “My family’s very upset about the incident because she’s just not like that — she was adventurous and everything, but those are the kind of stupid mistakes that my brother and I would make.”
A bear was found guarding the body and Royal Canadian Mounted Police shot and killed the bear.
