Attacking Grizzly BearIt is believed that the same grizzly bear, rearing three cubs, that attacked Dustin Flack last month around the northern reaches of Yellowstone National Park in Montana, has attacked another hunter. Read of Flack’s encounter here and here.

Three young men were bow hunting elk in the Beattie Gulch area just north of the Yellowstone National Park. The man who got attacked was hiding in the sage brush while another companion was mimicking a cow elk call. The three cubs preceded the sow through the woods and came within touching distance of the hunter. Soon the bear attacked. A hunting buddy was able to run the bear off by shooting at it with a .45 caliber handgun.

A second and separate bear mauling took place in the Tom Miner Basin, about 14 miles west of Beattie Gulch. A group of four hunters had split into two groups of twos. One group’s lead hunter saw movement in the woods ahead and soon realized he was being attacked by a grizzly. He pulled his pepper spray which initially turned the bear but the bear continued to come at him.

His partner fired twice at the bear with a .44 magnum pistol killing it.

You can read more about both of these bear attacks in the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.
