Out of Control, Deer Send Ecosystem Into Chaos

I dont know what to make of this. Its sounds bad. I just wonder if its all legitimate.

In some places, I think it is bad but that’s not what you are going to find everywhere. The problem areas are in fact those in and around these housing developments that seem to be the trend – 5+ acre lots, green space, etc. Prime protection and feed grounds for the deer, with no hunting allowed.

The real problem is like Tom said, there is a private property lack of hunters. Here in Michigan, there is little problem in the UP, but in the lower peninsula they have quite a problem with the people that do hunt not owning the land they need to hunt. State lands have a massive amount of people hunting them, in some areas to an almost dangerous level of human saturation for the rifles being used, and those state lands are managed. It is the surrounding private lands where all the deer know to go during the season that are not hunted that are the problem. Even up here (UP) where there is almost 100% support for hunters, being on the edge of state land there is no sport for me to take the deer that they chase into my property opening morning. I can take all my deer and be to work before noon. I generally try to use the doe permits before the general permits, as I am in it for the meat.

Anyway the point of this is that I am the only one I know in my mid 20′s that has their own chunk of land they can hunt. No one else I know under 40 can afford to buy land to hunt or if they could, they could (some living in larger cities make enough) they can’t get the time off or afford to drive halfway across the state to the land that they could afford to buy to hunt. The reason there is a drop in younger hunters is not an aversion to hunting, it is economic. Many people I know can not afford a decent rifle or clothing to hunt with. Every year I open my safes and closets to any young men or women that can take the time off so that they do not have to worry about an extra cost to hunt. To me, spending $1600 for rifles for other people to use is a much more effective way to spend my money to gain 2nd amendment support than having lobbyists piss it away. (Especially to have Republican appointees stab us in the back, but that is a whole other post.)

I meant “take and gut” before noon. If I didn’t stop to gut and hang them I would be right on time…

I too had to do some management for my white tail deer, because they were becoming overly populated. I was able to shoot a trophy buck during the process, and had a custom metal art mount designed with my trophy buck mount. It’s really nice, and I have had numerous comments on it–really a great conversation piece when guests come by and notice it.
