Down here in FL, we have a large population of coyotes, ever since the 70's when they started to show up...Now just last year I saw what I thought was a wolf crossing the road in front of me, hunting deer..After doing some research, I found that "coydogs" had become fairly common. Crossing with the domestic dog, the coyote had become a "coydog". Whether or not the offspring is sterile, I couldn't discover, but I'm thinking in time, that might be possible, if just one is born not sterile....They damn sure look and act like a wolf!

Swampman - There's a very good chance that your area has either wild or hybrid wolves about. It is becoming more commonplace to find hybrid wolves in much of the Northeast. Once was not to long ago shot and killed in Vermont.

Last night I was reading a very interesting article from one of the world's most recognized authority on wolves and he was saying that DNA testing is revealing most wolf attacks are hybrid. He also says he believes that the wolves brought down from Canada technically speaking were probably hybrid as well as no testing was ever done back in 1995. He doubts there really exists a pure wolf anymore. With DNA testing, this is how Defenders of Wildlife are getting out of reimbursing ranchers and farmers for lost livestock. They test for DNA. If it shows a hybrid, which means any amount of mix, DOW will not pay.

It is also interesting that you mention the bite marks on the livestock, I hope today I can get the article up I am working on that will show the progression of wolves before they begin attacking people. It's very interesting and the step you describe is the first step before the actual kill takes place.

The wolves or coyotes are testing the prey. Especially if this is their first attempt at a livestock kill. The animal takes many pains to watch and learn from its perspective prey and takes steps to discover how the prey will act and react and they adjust to it.

Interesting stuff.

What state do you live in and perhaps at least a region if you don't want to reveal your town? Perhaps there is information about such an event.

I was talking to my neighbor a dairy farmer, he said some of his cows were showing up at the barn with bite marks on them. The point is my large German Shepherd Czech dog was telling me he had to go out at 2:00 in the morning, this he never did before. Outside I could hear a few coyotes off in the distance no big deal. Then about half mile away a deeper louder call came across my hay field. My big male sat down threw his head back and started howling back. This went on for a few minutes and they both stopped. It make me wonder if some Wolfs have been released into our area and why.The Town I live in is 3/4 state land the rest farm lands.
