NOT!!!!!
Today, it is expected that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will officially announce that the gray wolf will be removed from protection under the Endangered Species Act in the states of Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. We can expect that everyone with a gun and a trap will instantly head into the woods to begin a campaign to systematically eradicate the wolf. Within months, the wolf will no longer be a part of the Yellowstone Area landscape.
There are a few problems with that assessment. One, is none of the states can officially begin their approved wolf management plans until 30 days after the USFWS makes the official announcement. Two, none of the plans allow for a systematic killing of wolves. Three, no state fish and game department would allow wolves to be killed illegally. Four, there will be so many lawsuits to stop the delisting who knows how many years this will be tied up in the courts.
But there is some good news that came out yesterday concerning the delisting. The Greater Yellowstone Coalition has decided to side with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and go along with the delisting.
The move won the endorsement of the Greater Yellowstone Coalition on Wednesday, when the groups’ came out in support of Fish and Wildlife Service efforts to delist gray wolves in the region.
The coalition is breaking ranks with a number of conservation groups in Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. The Sierra Club and roughly 10 other conservation groups are preparing a lawsuit to challenge the delisting, according to Sierra Club officials.
I have it on pretty reliable source that there are as many as 27 groups preparing lawsuits to stop this delisting process.
