Absolutely. I don’t see how carrying a weapon is a bad thing. I think college campuses need to offer more courses on firearm safety. Maybe even put a shooting range up and let students get scored on performance.

When another crazy person goes on a shooting spree the wrong thing to do is take guns away. The best thing to do is equip and educate people on how to defend themselves against the bad guys… Not give up their protection.

I think if it recieves public funds the law abiding public has a right to make use of it with out forfeiting their rights to do so.

It is strange reading this, I am a big believer in rights, however I am from the UK where there has never been a gun culture. Lately we are seeing youths arming themselves, kids as young as 15 years old are being tried for murder. I can’t imagine what it would be like if they were allowed to carry weapons.

Maybe the fact that Americans have been weened within a culture which allows and accepts the owning of weapons, makes them in general more responsible.

hexden, the way I look at it is the criminals are going to be doing the shooting. What criminal do you know that obeys the laws?? They don’t obey the laws because they are, in fact, criminals. So making laws to take guns away doesn’t really affect the criminal because they don’t pay attention to laws. It is the law abiding citizens who are mostly affected by this change… where they no longer have the ability to defend themselves in situations like campus shootings, mall shootings, etc. That is why there are always large amounts of fatalities. If all people were armed then someone might get shot but you would see the number of those killed in the shooting be reduced dramatically.

Sometimes there are other reasons why kids are carrying guns at a young age besides the laws. It could have to do with moral decay in a society, or lack of education. There are many factors….

I don’t think a fifteen year old can get a concealed weapons permit legally, can they? To my understaning, you would have to obtain a concealed weapons permit before you could carry a gun on campus. Is that correct or am I reading the issue incorrectly?

Not to change the subject.

But to run this poll in Philadelphia of all places. This is one of the biggest Anti-Gun city governments going. Part of the National Mayor’s Group trying to sue gun manufacturers and pushing along with Gov. Ed Rendell (Former Philadelphia Mayor), to disarm It’s law abiding citizens within the city limits. Which includes it’s higher education institutions.

Hey I’m all for this idea! but no way will it ever fly in Philadelphia, not with the current administration anyway.

George – What you might be not considering in this is the fact that it IS being done in a Philly paper AND look at the results!

Are the lawmakers in Philly completely out of touch with the desires of the people? It would seem that way.

I find this a real breath of fresh air. We’ve listened to the powers that be, completely controlled and manipulated by the press, spew forth their garbage about gun control and a simple poll shows clearly this isn’t what the people seem to be interested in.

Maybe the coffee’s brewing and too many politicians aren’t smelling it.

Good point, I guess us locals have become jaded with all the crap that continues to flow out of Philly. Pennsylvania is after all more than Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Our Governor has a problem understanding that. These two population centers elected him to office, not the rest of the state. He is anti gun and always trying some tactic to disarm the law abiding. Lucky for us most of the state legislature is pro gun! So, again good point might just be a slap back into your face for the Governor!! and I’m all for that.

I think it would be great to have more gun ranges and gun safety classes at the Universities and encourage more law abiding citizens and yes, students to get concealment licenses. I think that may be a possible deterrent to a criminal if they knew they could be shot before doing the shooting. I’ve carried a gun for years and never drawn it. Law abiding citizens don’t cause the problems and need to use their right to defend themselves and other innocent citizens.

While I agree that everyone has the right to protect themselves, the idea of granting concealed weapon permits on campus is rediculous. I will never understand why proponents arbitrarily trust that permit holders will act responsibly with divices that change and end lives. Even law-abiding ones.

My friend, who is a law-abiding citizen and permit holder, accidently shot two rounds inside his house on separate occasions. Just imagine is he had a temper?

The Answer to gun violence in schools is not allowing more guns. Also, everyone at one point was a law-abiding citizen

There are so many guns in my friends house, Dean, the living room is full, so they get stacked in the kitchen. Familiarity!
Everyone had guns at one point or another. If you didn’t feel you should use one, then someone else had to protect you.
I agree with Laurie. To take it a little further; Gun ownership is the most responsible thing you could ever do for yourself and your family. If you have grown up with guns they become familiar. If you haven’t grown up with guns, go get one, to start, and get familiar with it. You’ll have to look around some but I’m sure you can find a firing-range close by.
As responsible citizens, it’s our duty.

I just wanted to say to Dean that you need to take your friend with you to some gun safety classes. I grew up the guns and my father was very strict about respect for guns and people. I’ve carried a concealed weapon for 20+ years and never fired a round that I didn’t mean to. Also, I was taught that a gun is a last resort and I’ve never drawn it on a human being in all those years. Hope I never have to but I like knowing that I could defend myself if I had to. I also feel that as a woman it gives me a confidence that a would be attacker can sense and maybe doesn’t want to go there. Anyway, I’m not saying that everyone should carry a weapon. I think responsible people who have true gun safety habits and respect should always have the option.

The university of Colorado has allowed CCW for 10 semesters and had 0 problems same for the other 10 colleges across the country that allow CCW, no problems ever.

Concealed weapons permit holders are 5 times less likely to commit a crime than the average citizen. A comparison of arrest statistics shows that in the mid 90′s Florida CCW permits holders were 3 times less likely to be arrested than New York City POLICE officers.

Remember the brave unarmed teacher who blocked the door at VT, If he had been armed with a concealed handgun then those students in his class room could very well still be learning and living. Yes, let Americans arm themselves to protect themselves and others against criminals of all types. Read the 1902 dick act. Stop trying to steal my right to self defense and self preservation. Stop drumming up fascist communist codes which are UN-CONSTITUTIONAL. Learn what De-Jure law is versus de-facto law. Learn the Constitution and Bill of Rights. governments always take, they never give, ever.

You have to be at least 21 years old to BUY a handgun in my state (Oregon) but you can RECEIVE one as a GIFT if you are under 21. However, to get a conceal carry permit you MUST be 21 or older, prove you passed a class taught by a NRA certified instructor regarding conceal carry laws and all that, and plus get permission from the sheriff in your county… Pretty tedious process but it really weeds out the people who are going to F it up (people with something on their criminal record generally can’t get a conceal carry permit).
As a college student, I believe we absolutely SHOULD be able to conceal carry on campus, but only if licensed of course. Of course, if it is a public school you can conceal carry because what is stated in the policy about carrying on campus DOES NOT apply to people with a CHL, regardless of what some college staff may like you to think=)
I read over all the laws and I can carry in any public building, but yeah… colleges like to confuse their students over what their rights are. Boooo=(

We shouldn’t be encouraging our students to allow themselves to be victimized.

Chelsea, glad you are able to carry in Oregon, but here in Florida, there is a clause in the CCL that does not allow carry in both schools, government meetings, bars, and of course, courts and the like…I agree with you that they should be allowed, as I would be very uncomfortable if I had anyone I cared for walking around defenseless…However, there is some concession to carrying stun guns, pepper spray and the like, with the CCL ….As long as you know the laws of your own state, you can find out and carry accordingly….
