I have no problem with someone hunting with in a high fenced area. My point is I don't believe you can consider it fair chase. When a animal is confined to a area that it can not escape from.
That is the difference between hunting a animal and shooting a animal.

What about outfitters who advertise no kill no pay, or guarantee kills? "Fair Chase" has a varying definition from one person to the next. You hunt how you wish, others hunt how they wish so long as all are within the law, it's not one person's place to decide for another. Some don't beleive it's "ethical" to even use an outfitter/guide, that doesn't mean guiding/outfitting services shouldn't be allowed. I personally don't reccomend shooting at an animal over 600 yards for my own reasons, yet I'm not telling others they are unethical or shouldn't be allowed to take those shots if they're beyond my personally preferred max distance. I'v seen more situations with free range big game hunting that one could shake a stick at. There didn't need to be a fence for unethical hunting.

A follow up to my comment on fair chase. I personally don't recommend shooting at a animal at a thousand yards however the technology is out there. With the right rifle and ammo and practice lots of practice you can be a ethical hunter at long ranges.

Fair chase is just what it is. It gives a animal a chance to escape or flee from the hunter. I'll admit in todays world with rifles that will shoot a thousand yards and hit there mark the chance of escape is minimal but still there is a chance.
High fenced hunts give animals 0 chance of getting away. If you miss the shot it's no big deal you will get another and a another until you get you animal.
When they say no kill no pay there is no way they are letting you out of there until you shoot something.
Fair chase is as close to ethical as you will get in the hunting world today.

If you have to ask if it's ethical. You darn well already know the answer.

I'm no big supporter of B&C or P&Y record books for braggards but even I have to see the reasoning behind their rules for entry. The point of the book is for recording free ranging kills by HUNTERS. The county 4H fairs are where records belong for farmers harvesting animals they own or purchase.

Also...."ethical, sportsmanlike, lawful"- the only of these three that is set in stone, per say, is "lawful." The other two are defined by the individual (unless of course these become legislated at some point), and what is "ethical," and, "sportsmanlike" nearly always varies, and many times varyies greatly at that from individual to individual.

Funny, I noticed right off of the bat "...any free-ranging wild, native North American big game animal..." So it's not ethical according to B&C to persue and take animals not defined as 'Big Game,' and/or unethical to take pheasants for one as they are not native to North America??? Many of the same sportsmen who have big issues with certain things and how they pertain to their version of 'ethical' would take issue with that statement alone! This is one thing that will go on and on and on to no end, it's very nearly craziness!
