I got this picture of Dave Gorisek’s Illinois giant in my inbox. I had seen it before, but it jogged my feeble brain–this was one of the top bucks of 2007, killed with bow and arrow no less. Why in hell hadn’t I blogged it before? Dumb. I emailed Jeff Lampe, who blogs at Prairie State Outdoors and knows more about all the monsters that fall in IL than anybody. Jeff emailed me back:
Yeah, that’s my favorite buck (from 2007) so far out of Illinois. Here’s a link to the Gorisek Buck.
Read the story and focus on 3 quotes that tell the tale of why and how Dave killed the 17-point, 200 3/8†titan.
“I scheduled vacation from Nov. 7-14 to try to hit the rut.†Haven’t I told you to do that about 1,000 times in my magazine articles and blogs? Dave shot the brute on Nov. 11, one of the top three days to kill a mature buck in the central/northern states regardless of moon phase/weather.
“at 2:10 I saw a body come up the hill west of me.†Haven’t I told you about 1,000 times to hunt hard in the midday hours when the rut is on?
“I couldn’t tell what it was right away so I grunted six times very aggressively. That got his attention.†Haven’t I told you, oh about 1,000 times, to grunt and/or rattle at every rutting buck you see from your stand? You never know when your calls will strike a magic chord and bring a monster in. Read the story and see which call sealed the deal, ever tried that one?
Ya, I agree with Jeff, the Gorisek Buck is my favorite out of IL and without question one of the top bucks shot with archery tackle anywhere in America last season. (No drop tine but still amazing, LOL.)
