Reports are coming in all across the U.S. and Canada of bear/human encounters as it’s that time of year again. This should be a reminder that we share the outdoors with bears and we should be prepared. Forget what most media sources report that bear encounters are rare. They are more frequent than most people realize. We need to be told that and we need to be prepared when venturing into bear country.

In Montana, two campgrounds in the Gallatin National Forest were closed after a bear entered someone’s tent and chewed them up enough they had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.

In Beaver Creek, Colorado a bear that had broken into five homes, one in which it tore the door off with people in the house, was tracked down and killed.

And a trail runner near Lake Louise in Canada was attacked and bitten several times by a black bear.

Be on the lookout, be prepared for bears or you might become dinner fare.
