We think we are so smart and have for a long time but you know the natives are pretty clever themselves. The Arctic Sounder reports that recent studies show fat from moose is better for you than Crisco.

According to Sven Ebbesson, a medical researcher who has studied health trends among Alaska Natives since 1992, a change in diet to “unnatural” fats — Crisco, other vegetable shortenings — has been a problem.

“Until 1970, there was basically no diabetes or heart disease in Eskimos,” Ebbesson said in an earlier story by Ned Rozell for Alaska Newspapers.
