Deer/Vehicle Accidents By State

On December 26, 2008, my 12 year old son who has been hunting for several years and has had a hunters education course was hit in the forehead by double buckshot. This happened to be during dog season in Mississippi. I am not against hunting but I am very much against dog hunting. This adversion to dog hunting did not happen as a result of the accident. When I was around my son’s age I owned 12 resgistered milk goats. They were slaughtered by a pack of hounds. My grandfather opened season on all hunting dogs which set foot on his property. Needless to say a large number of innocent dogs were killed as a result. No one ever came forward to dispute his killing those dogs. Also, we had trouble with dogs bothering other livestock. I think Mississippi should be ashamed that they still allow this ignorant form of hunting to continue. Hunters who involve themselves in this ritual loose all sense of intelligent thought. They are all loaded up on alcohol or they are trying to out do the other person and they cause accidents. I do not know how many states allow dog hunting, but I am now a enemy to all dog hunters.

Isn’t it funny how all those states have hunting year after year yet DVA’s are just as high as ever?

To the person who responded to my comments on June of 2009. My son was with a group of responsible hunters. I do not know if they were drinking or not as I was not present. I am sick and tired of driving down country roads and major highways during deer season in Mississippi and witnessing people hunting from the side of the road or standing with rifle ready along the side of the road. Were are the authorities? I will tell you. There are not enough to go around. I appologize if I offended you Jes. I know there are a few and I mean a minortiy of you people who are responsible hunters. It is my experience though that the majority are a bunch of red-neck ya hoos who are more in it to out do the other guy with total disregard for the rest of us. In regards to my grandfather opening season on any dog that stepped on HIS property. He advertised what his intent was. Those goats where in plain sight from the road and happened to be worth around $5, 000.00 and this was thirty years ago. In fact he knew who the dogs belonged to. They were turned deliberately onto his property as had happened many times. Nothing was done because the people were not caught in the act. I am not studpid I am aware of laws sir. He was a hunter by the way but believed in still or fair chase. My husband owns dogs in which he hunts with. They are treated like children. They however are caged like criminals in a FINE kennel. MY SONrecovered with “double ought” buckshot in the middle of his brain. God was looking out for him that day. By the way he still hunts. If you had a child accidently shot with or with out “Responsible” hunters who had a quarter size hole in his head, was in a comma for 9 days and is still in surgical care tell me if your attitude would change. I am thankful that he only has a small amount of memory loss. This is due to God and the wonderful care he received. Do not judge me. I am an educated person and I am in full charge of my senses. I don’t care if people hunt. I still maintain that dog hunting for deer is wrong. I don’t care if you kill all the deer in the whole US. To me they are nothing but trouble. They have messed up electric fences and other things related to my livestock. I own horses that I paid a lot of money for. I am afraid every deer season that someone will shoot them at night from the road and yes a lot of people do this around where I live. You can preach all you want. I give you a thumbs up as a “responsible” hunter. I hate that like everything else the people who do right are out numbered by the FOOLS who don’t. I am still an advocated for stopping deering hunting with dogs and will relish the day it is stopped.

Tina, I can understand and sympathize with your attitude on dog hunting because of your son’s accident, but down here in Florida, where I hunt, no road hunting is allowed, and of course, no hunting on private property with dogs without the owners permission. All dogs have to be tagged and the owners are accountable for any damage incurred. It is a dying form of hunting down here, as land is being taken out of the states leased land, and the larger tracts are being sold for development. But if it is done by those who know the ways of deer and dogs, it is as responsible as any other form of hunting, as long as the laws are there to protect you. There are many places in the swamp where dogs can go, and man can’t and won’t, and these deer will never get shot without a dog to go in and run them out….

Most all of the time, these days, I still hunt, or hunt from a treestand. And only occasionally, will I hear the dogs running, since they are not allowed where I hunt. There are a lot of jerks in the world who have no respect for others or their property, and these types don’t even respect themselves….they have lost their self-respect. They will pay the price someday, and will be fortunate to do so in this world, before they pay the price in the hereafter, for the cost is much greater there…Most all of the folks I know are good folks, responsible hunters, and would have nothing to do with the type you described. But, whether hunter, or not, there are always some fools who throw their trash on the road, and have no respect for the rights of others. The best bet for these types is the law, and that’s what it is there for. I can well understand your grandfather shooting dogs who ran his livestock, and here in Florida, you can do that legally, and I have done so myself. You might check the laws of your state and see if they don’t apply there as well…There is usually a website that will give you all the laws, and if they don’t have some, why not start a petition that will give your legislators something to do?
Glad to hear your son has recovered. You are right, as it was God’s gift to keep him where you can still find his consolations.
I imagine that in Mississippi, any accident that is reported is done so by the party who files the complaint, and/or reports the accident. Perhaps your local sheriff or deputy does not do the job he is supposed to be responsible for…..
