Yes I did, and I would like to know the snow pack levels that winter prior to the photos, and were their drought conditions as well...and did any cattle range there in between the elk leaving to higher ground. Ive seen thousands of aspens die out on their own as well...I think we should let the elk alone, let the wolves alone and tear down all the cities and refurbish the natural winter ranges which the idiot human built those cities on...like Boise for example...prime winter range turned into asphalt and concrete....man never needed cities...spread em out make em grow their own food, plant millions of acres of industrial hemp..for food and products...bring back the barter system and silver and gold coin....then we can stop wasting time fighting over something thats everyones fault. While cleaning up the mess the elk/cattle can be fed hemp roughage for winter feed. Just need gods permission, thats government oppressive dictatorism. There is a way all this can work, it sure is not by telling one group of humans your life is destroying mother ghia and we are gonna force our way on you guys. Somebodys gonna get a black eyeball.

Greg, did you look at the words and pictures out of the past by George Wright about the Yellowstone elk range? Tragic that he was killed in an auto accident while in his 30s. It seems his legacy lives on.

So Montana probably has 54,000 elk. Nice article though, and toss in a photo of 500-600 elk and it looks good, Where the hell do they go in winter ? Lots of hunters including myself love to go to winter ranges and see the elk...thats why I say Idaho estimates are baked...can not speak for Montana..but if they count elk like Idaho biologists do...12345678930, LOL. 160,000divided by three=====more accurate.

Tom, between 130,000 to 160,000 elk are estimated in Montana.
Address is for a current article from Missoula Magazine.com It has a picture of an elk herd in the Robb-Ledford Wildlife Management Area mentioned by Allen Schallenberger, who stated that the wolves have run the elk out of there in winters since at least 2003. I realize the picture is not dated. Just checking out all sides. It also has elk population numbers, discusses probelems with elk-agriculture conflicts, and getting hunters on land where elk control is needed in Montana.

A few years ago I found an article with pictures showing the condition of the northern Yellowstone elk herd’s range, written by George Wright. ( If it doesn’t say photos click the next in the text.) If I remember correctly he said at that time there were 12,000 elk on the range that could support 6,000. And recently there have been 18,000! This is in Robert Fanning's area north of Yellowstone.
