The following photos were sent to me by a reader. As I understand the story, the son went out shed hunting and discovered this kill. He returned a few days later to check on the kill and nothing had changed.
Notice in the photo you’ll see that the wolves ate their way through the rear end of the elk and took out the fetus. This may or may not have been done while the elk was still alive. The wolves also may or may not return to clean up the rest of the carcass. Wolves are known to “surplus kill” – killing more than they need to eat just for sport.
It appears from the photos that the elk was bitten in the nose as there appears a substantial amount of blood that came just from that area. That is a kill tactic of wolves, to grab the throat or nose and immobilize the animal. Once that is accomplished, others in the pack eat what they came after, often while the elk is still alive and then left to die. Cruel but a fact.
It should also be pointed out that this did not happen deep in the wilderness but only a few hundred yards from the person’s back door who took the photos.
