Tom,

The media yoiu are expert with and your ability to quickly get to the real essence of the issue will bring out the best in Kantar and Wentworth and make all us hunting fanatics better advocates for strong management of the deer herd and loving devotees of our hunting past.

In fairness to Al and to be forthcoming, when I initially emailed him, I didn't give what I was asking for much thought and I'm sure I came across to him as a complete ass. I'm glad he had the wherewithal to put me in my place and smarten me up. From there I think we was able to move ahead and I look forward to more communication with him.

Lee Kantar I think personally is underrated and is a great asset to Maine. I try to deal with a lot of people in other states at the level Lee is and I can say, none of them are as courteous, professional and as helpful as he has been. Through him, he has taught me a ton and for that I am grateful.

Tom, you are really good at this and with Wentworth and Kantar you are dealing with the most knowledgeable people in the state on this.

I have copies of the Maine Big Game Magazine published by Al Wentworth and A History of the White-Tailed Deer in Maine edited by Don Stanton that was published in the 1960's. I treasure both.

Stanton's work needs to be brought up to the current date and Al Wentworth was ahead of his time. Maybe the internet, the Black Bear Blog, Al Wentworth and Lee Kantar can get it done.

Al Wentworth must have untold treasure in photographs of Maine deer.

Waiting for Part 2 of your report. Hopefully, many more.

Thanks,

Richard

I was also going to say that like with Kantar, once you present a position, it's like being a baseball umpire - half think you're a blind idiot and the other think you're pro material.

I'm not interested in taking sides. I'm interested in good science, getting to the facts, making a determination and then formulating a plan.

Sorry, Richard - I forget to double check those links to make sure they worked. They do now.

Yeah, I knew Lee was going to speak at the MASTC banquet and from what Lee told me and what little feedback I've gotten, his discussion was about this very thing.

On one forum, some that attended got bored and left and said they weren't too impressed. I was also led to believe that he had a lot of charts and graphs.

I've had this information since after the Maine Sportsman Article and before Lee's MASTC banquet but have hesitated to write a story much because of the difficulty in helping people understand better.

I'm not brainiac but it did take me several times through Lee's information before it began to sink in and make some sense.

I'm not leaving Kantar and IFW in the clear yet. There's more to come on this and I'm also extremely disappointed in IFW for avoiding the predator issue as were mandated to do.

Nice article. I read an article related to this in the May issue of the Maine Sportsman and it was also very good.

I did want to have a bigger picture which you attempted to provide. The MASTC Link (http://www.skinnymoose.com/antlermap.pdfdid) did not work.

Kantar was the speaker at the MASTC annual banquet this past weekend and I wonder what he had to say on this topic (or did he say what you just reported).. I wonder what other information that Kantar has that would be in chart form that would be of interest to Maine deer hunters.
