Ed Wardle Abandons Wilderness Adventure

I don’t envy ed at all. Temps at night can be brutal. July 4th was 32 degrees one summer near tangle lakes – rained all week. We target practiced – a lot – and built large fires.

Too bad he wasn’t near some hot springs to get warmed up in but if he’s got no energy for food gathering as well, it’s time to go…

i’ve had the thot, before, to go it on my own – in the wilds. That thot lasted nearly 20 seconds before i realized i was not fit enough – physically or mentally.

And his solitude is getting to him. I bet if he got a phone call on his cell, an encouraging word might do wonders.

Maybe more research or living near by for an extended period of time would have more acclamated him to his surroundings. Depending on where you are, game can be very scarce – it is very big out there and some of it is impassable like his other film showed.

He’s fortunate in that he is not traveling and getting lost. Unless you have compass, gps, you can’t follow the sun very well as it rises in the NE and sets in the NW – very confusing during the day.

You are pathetic piece of dung. Why would anyone want to see a grown man cry on TV makes no sense at all? You have given men all over the world a bad name and moreover they hate you. Here is a thought, I would check your pants to see if there is a possible transgender operation in your future.

First off, grow up, you’ve just given men a “bad name” by that rediculous comment. On that note, Mr. Hole(thoughful name by the way), you’re probably a 300 lb mess of a human being, a waste of my air, and would most likely crap your pants if you were in Mr. Wardle’s situation(not that you’d ever have the guts to put yourself in that situation). I think he was incredibly brave for doing what he did, and the whole point was to have little with him and see if it could be done. Clearly, and sadly, it couldn’t be done by him, and thankfully he made it out alive, as any minor mistake could have been deadly. He seems to have lived through many adventures and experiences, and I commend him, while you’re more than likely working at McDonald’s trying to get your GED and save up for that prized double-wide. Because you are bound by laws that prohibit you to shoot at game that would sustain you: caribou, moose, bears, how can you expect to survive on small game alone? Still, your effort was a testimony to what it takes to survive in the wild. I’m not sure I have what it takes to kill and gut a porcupine, nevermind cutting out a porcupine’s anus.

I think the isolation worked more against you than the challenges of your environment. I’d like to say that I would do better in the isolation, but I wouldn’t know unless I actually tried it.

Ed was willing and I’m sure eager in the beginning to venture into the unknown. He said on several occasions that he wanted to see if he could make it. The two obvious barriers he faced were food and mental well being. Most people would not have considered the toll the mind plays on such isolation. We know that Ed considered it because he told us he spent time with a shrink before going.

Ed also admitted to not being a survival expert which limited him on using all the resources around him for nutrition.

Ed became confused toward the end of his 50 days but what confused him most I think was that he was confused about his confusion.

The question I have is this. Did the mental breakdowns come as a result of poor nutrition or would they have happened anyway? Another thought to consider is if his home sickness and loneliness contribute to his ability to provide himself with proper nourishment?

He owned up to his fear of bears as what kept him from moving down river in search of more food. Again, was the fear deeply hidden before going into the wilderness or was the fear exacerbated because of poor nutrition and a mental breakdown?

Ed put himself in a position where he wanted to learn and discover if he could make it. My bet is he didn’t consider the mental challenge as being as difficult as it was.

To believe that somehow because a grown man cries, particularly under the circumstances, is making a bad name for all men, is moronic and evidence of shallow thinking and understanding.

PieHole – there are outdoor challenge courses available here in the U.S.A. Near my hometown there is a school there. People of all ages test their resolve after training and venture into the woods to live solo for a few days. Many can’t do it. They find they can’t stand themselves enough to be alone.

Perhaps you should look into it. One such program is called, Outward Bound.

For me the most impressive and heartening aspect of this project was that he failed, omitted to film much of his descent into starvation and the resultant mental breakdown, and yet the programme was still aired. Life is full of strife and failure, but it is rare for it to be seen on TV, especially in such a raw humble and emotional way.

Scott trecked to the South Pole a century ago using ill-suited ponies and unsuitable equipment, to find the Norwegian flag already planted there before dying on the way home – he became and remains a national hero, not for the fact he failed but for the sheer courage of his enterprise.

The initial rush of the armchair pie-eaters and their friends the Press to their soap-boxes was to be expected, and can of course be ignored. The British are likely to find this a cause for (quiet) pride and interest – any disapproval from overseas will only increase this.

Yes he was under-prepared and untrained for the challenge – lets face it though, there was an enormous safety blanket around him – electric fences, sat phone, GPS tracking. What should be noted is that he was allowed to set out to live out a boyhood dream, with a very high chance of failure (enforced by the game laws to some extend, though the odds were re-balanced in his favour by the weapons/hunting tools he carried) and that is a rare thing to witness on TV these days.

Overall, a brave undertaking, and compelling viewing, well done Ed.

You bring up some good points. I also think it is great in that it was carried out for what it was, no real false pretenses to mislead an audience into thinking it was another “Survivorman” or “Man Against the Wild” television show.

Perhaps to man viewers the show was a let down because he failed in their eyes. I just can’t see it as failure or success as much as an opportunity that afforded him the chance to discover much about himself. Too many of us humans think we are pretty darned important, until we are dropped into the wilderness such as Ed only to discover we are quite insignificant.

I find Ed’s adventure appealing but through him, we have seen the state of males in our present day society. They are becoming more and more feminine and sissified all the time. Just look at the pandemic of “man hugs” and even men kissing each other like it’s normal behavior. Look at how men wear earrings and bend their wrist. And women seem to be growing balls while men are becoming wimps. I guess it’s evolution.

I find it rather disturbing seeing Ed break down as he did. This was not a good series as it focused on and leading up to his failure. He was doomed from the beginning. His main focus was not being eaten by bears, he is weak and frail so maybe the jungles of New York City would have been better suited to his mental state. Find something else to do Ed. Better luck next time.

Ed, you are the biggest baby i have ever seen! get to gether you fucking mentalcase! I had more expectation of this show other than see grown up man crying for everything! did you have your rifle to blow your brains out in case you saw or heard a bear, or maybe a squirrel.. good for you that you survived this incredible dangerous adventure, your kids, if managed to make some.. are for sure real proud!! loooooser!

Until you have done it you can’t possibly know the hardship involved. Mother nature can and will be cruel. Hunger and fear can drive a man off the edge pretty quick.
It has nothing to do with being a sissy boy you can be a tough s.o.b. or think your are and the elements can break you very quick So until you’ve been there and done it don’t knock someone for trying.

A man who hasn’t found his own limitations, has not found his own humility, and accordingly, is often a fool, a braggart, and a tyrant to himself and others….And with the “easy life”, most of these arm chair commentators lead, it is no wonder why they haven’t even tried…..

Kuddos….much for you. It has also been my dream to do this…live off the land and know I could survive if I had to. Your adventure and realization about the wilderness “It doesn’t care if I am hungry or lonely.” Well I have always known that. But it is a call to arms for me….you expressed a desire to live life fully, to live a wonderful life. THAT I can relate to. And just think, you did it, in the attempt itself. You have also motivated me…an almost 50 year old woman to get back off her butt and stretch her limits again. I thank you. You have no idea what you have done. (Would love to see the naysayers “Macho-men” try it themselves. Armchair weenies!
