For sale: One elk-hunting cabin in the East Fork of the Bitterroots. Cabin has been used successfully during hunting seasons for over 50 years by scores of Montana families. Cabin includes large meat-hanging crossbeam which has served well in the past years. This beam hasn’t been used for several years.

This rustic cabin is situated in the Billie Springer Memorial Park, which is a community comprised of Armed Service veterans. Until recently, this area was prime for big game hunting and was very popular during the fall months, September through December. While the number of huntable animals has dropped off, the cabin would be an ideal base for those interested in observing wolves (Fish, Wildlife and Parks Defenders of Wildlife; tribal moose harvesters; the U.S. Forest Service et al). Proceeds from sale will go to local food banks.

Sad but true, I imagine we will see more of this in the future if something is not done about the Wolf. They haven’t had any effect on our Elk and deer here in southern Wyoming yet but I know it’s only a matter of time.

Down your way don’t you mostly get wind blown dry winters including snows, but leaving a lot of open dry ground.. Winter ranges where elk can actually run ?

I worked the oil fields over there and I remember bitter cold and wind blown snow drifts with a lot of open ground..

Belly deep snows spells big time trouble for elk where wolves are concerned..

Actually I live in the mountains (Medicine Bow) but yes the Elk here move out on the desert in winter where it is wind blown and not near as much snow as we have here at the ranch. So your right the elk are in a better position to get away from Wolves.

Interesting news. I know that the elk numbers are actually up for that area of Montana, but down for the areas around Yellowstone which has been hit by bad winters(elk starving).

You know that elk numbers are up in that area ? How so ? Do you live there ? Do you often frequent the place ? I have hunted and guided that country and it is a ghost of what it once was.. As far as elk herds are concerned.. It is a part of the Lolo wolf zone, same wilderness, or forest.. IDFG disagrees with your claim of “knowing”.. as well.. Are you living in or near Chicago ? Can you turn me onto the model or make of spotting scope you’re using, I want one.. You really need to grow Mike, and stop pushing all that disinformation you thrive on that fits your personal agenda and beliefs, as well take a look around yourself at Illinois and tell me what makes you think you can better judge or decide how our backyards should be run or managed.. Large groups of old cow elk don’t support your bullshit, reality bites, grow up and face it city boy.

And I should add that if the most mismanaged piece of Wilderness on the face of this Earth known as Yellowstone National Paved Road ways Park with several hundred out buildings has starving elk from winter snows, why is it my plans to go ride that mountain range just to the south of the Park are on hold at the moment due to low snow levels.. Yellowstone Elk are over predated by wolves, and the grizzly’s are even moving away from that dog infested train wreck. I’ll go with the people on the ground living around that country over the misinformed opinions from afar.. My friends and sources living on those lands and living with the changes wolves have brought them have never lied to me in 35 years.. Oh, I used to work and guide there also.. I used to take panty wastes wet nosed little arrogant snots like you campng..
