Yesterday I introduced readers to a new subject category that I wanted to cover here at the Black Bear Blog – Survival/Survival Skills. The introduction seemed to be quite popular and lo and behold the discussion in the comments section quickly turned to outhouses with links to pictures displaying some of the fine architecture involved.

Many of us country folk are quite familiar with outhouses, some having grown up with them and many a rustic camp or cabin dotting our wilderness areas still use them. And with outhouses has always come humor. My very good friend and Maine humorist, Joe Perham, wrote the book on outhouse humor and so I took the time to rip one of his CD’s “That Wonderful Old Two-Holer” to mp3 format and uploaded it so readers could enjoy some good ole outhouse humor from one of the best in the business.

The Outhouse

There was once a country boy who hated using the outhouse because it was hot in the summer and freezing in the winter…plus it stank all the time. The outhouse was situated on the bank of a creek and the boy determined that one day he would push that outhouse into the creek.

So one day after a spring rain the creek was swollen so the little boy decided today was the day to push the outhouse into the creek. He got a large stick and started pushing. Finally, the outhouse toppled into the creek and floated away.

That night his dad told him they were going to the woodshed after supper. Knowing this meant a spanking, the little boy asked why. The dad replied, “Someone pushed the outhouse into the creek today. It was you, wasn’t it, son?”

The boy answered yes. Then he thought a moment and said, “Dad, I read in school today that George Washington chopped down a cherry tree and didn’t get into trouble because he told the truth.”

The dad replied, “Well, son, George Washington’s father wasn’t in that cherry tree.”

Oh, that’s cool. I always thought outhouses were like manure spreaders only they spread humor……sort of.

Keep an extra roll of TP in a coffee can. The Sears and Roebuck does not make a good substitute – too glossy!

1985ish we bought a circa 1790 farm house with the idea to turn it into a bed and breakfast. There’s a book called, “Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn”. It describes, with photos, about the way old farms were built back in “the day”.

This old farm was one of the big house, little house, back house, barn. The “back house” came complete with a three-holer, if you can believe that AND an old Sears catalog as well as a Montgomery Ward. All that’s left now is a picture…..somewhere.

For the (often illiterate) public houses of rest were marked with symbols, the men’s were marked with a star and the women’s were marked with a moon. Since they received more wear and tear, often the stars didn’t last as long as the moons, and in a nutshell is how we come to have moons on our privies.
