Video: Interview With Idaho Woman Who Encountered Wolves In Her Yard

Dear Karen:

I’m thinking this is the begining of a new day and time for you. Somethings are never forgotten, as much as we might try. Not that long ago, I was approached when I was dropped off, like you were. I had to play their game as I was being surrounded. I was amazed at the clarity-rush that came over me. As much as I was not in control, yet, something came over me and my thoughts were perfect; as yours were at the appropriate time. You were correct in all your actions, as much as you will go over them again and again in your mind, they will linger for some time. I remember it like yesterday and the emotions of the encounter are still “available” any time I am reminded of it. Today, reading your story, brings it all back again.

I have never been the same since that encounter. Nor, have I been the same since a similar incident invloving two, so, I’ve used the anger to redirect it at the culprits responsible for the increase in “encounters”. To be honest, I don’t how well that is going by the looks of things in Dogville, Karen.

Over the years, the different things that would trigger the experience to run thru my mind again, firtst led to – if I could have done something different and many other questions, too. But the answer is no, simply no. It’s like, Could anyone have done something different if approached on the street, say, by five thugs, or two? We all know the thugs belong in jail. Not like today where our enemies are allowed freedoms that I don’t experience, where following the “rules” ties your hands and where our first defense – the Media – has slit our throats. You did a great job showing us what happened to you. Don’t keep it locked up inside but let’s change it. They just changed you, didn’t they? They have lessons to learn about that!

On November 27, 2010 Karen Calisterio stated that she had a “wolf encounter” in her driveway of her rural home near Tensed Idaho.
The physical aspects are as follows using only the facts supplied by Karen from various sources and checked using maps, etc.
Karen states that her driveway is 1/3 of a mile long from the mailbox on Moses Mountain Road to her house. That translates in to 587 yds. The driveway goes up a slight incline for about the first 457 yds and then takes a sharp right and then goes 130 yds to her house.
The first 447 yds has a vertical rise of about 106 feet from the main road to where the driveway cuts right ,it then tops out on the slight ridge and then drops about 22 feet in elevation over the last about 130 yards to the house
Karen states that she had walked about ¼ of the distance up the driveway when she noticed the wolves “at the crest of the driveway where it turned to go to the house.”
This would put Karen at near 147 yds up the driveway. That would put the wolves at “the crest of the driveway” close to 300+ yds away from where Karen was at that time, (Three football fields) and about 65 ft higher in elevation.
Karen states that the wolves “advanced on her for an estimated distance of 100 feet” (30 yds) while at the same time she was walking backwards. There seems to be some question if the wolves approached her at all. Quote of November 29 in the Spokesmen-Review; “My husband and neighbors later checked the tracks and could see where the wolves had come down to where I had first seen them. Then there tracks took off down towards a pond” she said. (Down the road from behind the crest to where she first seen them?? Remember she first saw two then two more)
Conclusion.
As Karen walked up the drive the wolves were walking down it. At a distance of about 300 yds they noticed each other. The wolves then ether advanced another 100 feet before realizing that Karen was a human (270+ yds away) and left the area, or immediately left the area (300 yds away) depending on which version you roll with.
Whether one would or should feel threatened by this encounter is open to interpretation.
Karen said she felt threatened by it.

I would like to thank Karen for coming forward, even when knowing you would be attacked by the lefties that would love nothing more than to confiscate your property and freedom. Pay them no attention, their time of propaganda is coming to an end, their financing from tax dollars is coming to an end and the protection of their cash cow is coming to an end. What you have done is give those who have been quiet about these encounters the willingness to come forward, and that is a true service to the public and their safety.

Karen’s address was given; from there it is easy to go to Google Earth and zoom in on the property. The cursor gives the elevations as it is moved and one can apply the measuring tools to quite accurately determine distances without ever visiting the property. I did the same; just didn’t comment on it.

After watching Rockholm’s video regarding the incident it is obvious that this woman was very moved by the enconter. She envisioned many scenes for her possible demise. Again, I submit that this does not prove real danger to her life.

The old system allowed hunters far more opportunity and flexibility in their elk hunting. The zone management change was implemented to reduce opportunity and force a weapon choice preference. Once again these idiots talk like they have a clue, when they couldn’t be further from the reality.

Just for Jeffy’s own benefit, this was the elk management system before the implementation of the zone system.

Idaho had two elk tags, a Panhandle Tag and a Southern Tag.

A Panhandle tag was good for units 1-9, just as it is today, although it could be used in ANY unit during archery season, that means the ENTIRE state Jeff.

The Southern Tag was good in all other units, that means ALL zones except 1-9 Jeffy, and likewise could be used in any zone in any archery season.

So in reality a person with possession of a Panhandle tag could hunt archery season in the entire state from labor day weekend, and then rifle hunt in the panhandle for the entire rifle season, then hunt any late season archery hunts anywhere in the state. And also hunt any muzzle loader hunt in the Panhandle.
This usually allowed a dedicated hunter to hunt continuously from Labor Day until the end of December.

The Southern Tag allowed the same basic season durations short of being restricted to ALL other units sans the panhandle units during rifle season and muzzle loader hunts.

So his asinine claim it was implemented to offer hunters the most choices is plainly absurd and based in ignorance. It was contrived to do exactly the opposite. I swear none of these nuts have any clue about anything they think they do.

This is the words of the person who had the wolf encounter tonight in Potlatch… by the way the wolf runs, this is less than 1 mile from the Jr/Sr High School and City Park. The original call of this encounter came in at 9:39 PM and a follow-up email (text below) came in at 11:22 PM. This person called me because they had read about my encounter in the paper and wanted to know who they should report it to. I gave them Scott Rockholm’s contact information and suggested they call the Latah County Sheriff’s Office.

Words from first person encounter…

“My 14 year old son and I pulled into the driveway and the… wolf was into a bag of deer bones & scraps. It didn’t even run. It was so casual I thought it was a dog at first.

I got out of the truck and ran inside to get my gun and camera and when I came back, my son had just watched it walk (not run) over the bank into the trees. Couldn’t see it again. We live 1 mile from the Jr/Sr High School. Unbelievable!

We heard howling at 10:30 tonight. It seemed like it may have been a juvenile or yearling pup. But I was totally blown away at how unconcerned it was with our presence. Shit! Wife & the kids were just inside the house less than 30 yards away! What if my daughter had been taking out the garbage?”

This has been reported to the Latah County Sheriff’s Office.

Karen the sportsmen I spoke to said he was on Moses Mountain hunting and that he saw dead elk in one sighting three in one place not far apart. The first two had only eaten upon a little with blood from the nose, and guts gone. The one cow was dead with no injuries but looked like she died of exhaustion from being run to death. *He said he had never seen anything like that before in his life, and this man has hunted all his life, and has a Wildlife Biology degree just for those that will discredit his observations.

This wolf encounter in Potlatch is of uptmost concern. This wolf first came to this person’s yard last night (that he is aware of); it returned today in broad daylight (2PM) and was not afraid of anyone. This person can stand on their porch and see the school and the city park, that is how close he is to downtown.

This person has again called the Latah County Sheriff’s office and IDF&G and both agencies refused to come out or do anything about it. He stressed the danger being in the city limits and the school and park so close and they still would not do anything. The mayor and the media has been contacted. It appears the Mayor is issuing a citywide alert and the school as well.

This man had to meet his kids at the bus stop with a gun to bring them home safely and his wife, kids and dog are now sequestered in their house with no help from the agencies that are charged with protecting the public.

Wolf problem ? Kill the wolf.

I don’t think you can shoot a wolf for walking down the street. I could be wrong. I remember this story from before the wolves were relisted this last time (I’m pretty sure the charges were dropped):

Frachiseur, 50, shot the adult male wolf outside his Squaw Valley home on June 12. He perceived the animal to be a threat to domestic animals and children in his rural neighborhood, according to an Idaho Department of Fish & Game report.

Frachiseur reported the killing to Fish & Game the following day, after having second thoughts over whether he acted appropriately or not, Senior Conservation Officer Rob Soumas said in his report.

Frachiseur told conservation officers the wolf had been pacing around the perimeter of his home and opted to dispatch it to protect his dogs, in addition to his neighbors’ children and their animals.

Fish & Game confirmed through University of Idaho lab analysis that the animal was pure wolf and not a hybrid, court records indicated. Frachiseur told Fish & Game he shot the wolf from about 170 yards with a .30-30 rifle.

Frachiseur’s Priest River attorney, Jennifer Fegert, entered a written plea of not guilty on Oct. 19, 2009

I found the other story I remembered. This fellow didn’t get charged for shooting the wolf in his yard (Feb 2010).

“Lowell Graber, who lives on Meadow Creek Road 7 miles north of Highway 2, was justified in shooting the 96-pound male wolf, said Greg Johnson senior conservation officer for Idaho Fish and Game.”

SSS is not the answer, but not for the same reason you are thinking. Many people are killing wolves like crazy, and it will not make a dent in the wolf population. I’m talking many wolves too.

There was a link to a recording made here of the wolves on the 10th. It sounded much worse today – more wolves and lots closer. There are as many wolves here as there are elk.

I spoke to a teacher that had a wolf in her classroom and she assured me that her students are aware that the ESA isn’t being used as it was orginally intended for, and there are groups out there that have used the ESA as a tool to destroy local economies, family businesses that depend on the Natural Resources to make a living.

I think the “greed” from the groups that used the “wolf” to end hunting and ranching have awoken a sleeping giant of Idaho citizens, that didn’t learn from the Spotted Owl. Now it’s not only logging communities effected by everyone is effected by the fraudulent ESA, clear down to recreationists, sportsmen, and people that live in rural areas in the NRM states.

This chapter of the story isn’t written yet, but it will be. You can only suppress a LIE for so long.

Save Bears over at Ralph Maughan said it very well. He stated that this entire wolf program was going to backfire, and he was glad he got out of Dodge when he had the opportunity. However, Save Bears was involved even with introducing wolves into Yellowstone, so he may think he ran away, but his fingerprints are all over this scandal as well.

Interesting when the Potlatch Man called USDA about the habituated wolf at his house third day in a row they said they’ve had 100′s of reports of wolves around our area lately.

When asked if they could release the reports for Public Safety and Awareness the man said no.

This has been going on for 15 years from the third day the cattle eating wolves were released in the Frank Church. Three days they were in Salmon eating cattle.

These guys really believe this. LIE. Residents in my community and surrounding rural towns hunt for sustenance. Most people I know including myself wouldn’t have ANY food right now if it wasn’t for elk or deer meat. *Right now most people I know need fruit and vegetables and our local Food Bank can’t keep up.

Chandie- The simple fact is, there is nothing you can do with people like her, she is a victim of her own ignorance and inability to think for herself, she will be a willing victim when times get tough.

It would be nice if these biologists would start studying the habituated
wolves that are starting to hang around rural towns. Its one thing to have
wolves out in the wilderness, and quite another thing to have wolves moving down into town and around schools.

It would also be nice if the media would pass along information to these
rural communities on how to keep their pets safe from wolves. There is a glaring lack of information for the people affected by this experiment. Its hard to
