All in the family would go to the woods in Upton, Maine and stay until they got enough Deer Meat to last the winter. It was an all day trip to reach the camp by horse and buggy. Sometimes it would take more than a week to get all the deer they needed. I can remember my dad telling the story of one trip he went on as a very young child in the early 1900s. They had some deer hanging from a tree near the back of the camp. He and his dad and mother were sleeping on the top bunk up near the roof. In the middle of the night a wildcat climbed up onto the roof and started to screech something awful and it scared him so bad he was afraid to be out in the woods after dark for the rest of his life.
