I’ve spent some hours looking for horns in the last two weeks. I’ve hunted around my house 3 times (twice with a passenger though) and a few times where I do my serious hunting south of town. I’m struggling, but that’s pretty standard for me. Shed hunting and mushroom hunting are great holes in my outdoorsman abilities.

The good news is that last weekend we had The Arkansas Boys in town. In fact Saturday we had almost a dozen people out hunting. I found woodcocks, quail, ducks, geese, turkeys (toms!), a coyote, and plenty of deer, but only a little piece of an antler. The good news is that some of the other guys did better than me.

Among the finds were are nice match set of a decent but probably young 10 point. The best finds were both halves though, a tremendous 10 half and a heavy old deformed base 6 (with a small piece of skull attached).

I’ve hunted for sheds several days in the last couple of weeks, both around town and in farm country. Then on Monday I saw a big bachelor group of bucks near my house. A couple had both sides, 3 had half, and a few were bald. In total they were probably 65% dropped. The best of the group was this guy (video narrated by my daughter):

We did find several sheds over the weekend so I think it’s time to be looking, but they obviously aren’t all dropped.

Our weekend hunt was mostly weathered out but we did get out for a few hours Saturday in the rain/sleet/snow. The dogs and I covered quite a bit of ground and I saw sign everywhere I went:

Then the rain/sleet/snow turned into ice and it was time to watch basketball by the fire:

I did see some snows and blues roosting and feeding in the area. The conservation order started last week so maybe a good sky carp hunt is in order next weekend…

I haven’t looked for a shed yet this year because it seems like only a few hours go by between snow storms. I’ve also had an eye on this weekend when our friends from Arkansas are coming up to look for them with us. I’ve been itching to look for the sheds of the monster I saw several times but couldn’t close the deal on… Of course it’s supposed to snow tonight, tomorrow, and Sunday… ugh…

Anyway, I’m out of here. Hopefully I’ll be back Sunday with some nice pictures of bone…

Until then you can read an interesting article about shed poaching here.

I’m a PADI certified diver but I admit it’s not really my thing. Of course if I thought I could find elk racks underwater I might dive more often. That’s exactly what Jeff Bosek did on a dive in 2007. The local museum estimated their age at between 2,000-12,000 years old. It’s not some little raghorn either.

I had about an hour of sunlight left after I finished a legal project in the general area of one of my best deer hunting spots. It’s the spot where I saw the big non-typical and the 150 class 10 point in the same hunt. Anyway, I didn’t have a chance to get into the area where I figured the best finds would be, but I did find this one:

I also saw probably 1000 ducks, 100 geese, and 7 deer. Plus it was 72 degrees when I got out of my truck. What a day!
