Davis, W.Va. – Canaan Valley Resort, in conjunction with Face Level Industries, will host West Virginia’s first ever Snow-Body Boarding Competition (Airboarding) on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2009, at the ski area. The event is open to the public and prizes will be awarded.
An Airboard is an inflatable boogie board-styled sled with a tri-channel bottom with easy-to-grip handles. Riders lay on their stomachs, head-first, and steer by adjusting their weight and swiveling their hips.
“This may seem too extreme for some, but surprisingly, Airboarding is easy to learn and is faster than skiing or snowboarding, but safer,” says Josh Galt, owner and team rider for Face Level Industries. Airboarding is the fastest growing extreme winter sport in Europe. Face Level Industries promotes face level sports done with forward motion, headfirst and horizontal to gravity and through safely and methodically challenging the limits of what is possible.
Activities will begin at 11a.m. on Feb. 7 and will include an Airboard demo area, music, outdoor BBQ, games, and prizes. In addition, participants can meet Face Level’s extreme athletes. The race will begin at 2 p.m. and will include three race events: an extreme speed downhill event where racers will compete for top speed, a boardercross-style event where individual racers will compete head-to-head for first place, and a team race event.
In order to race, participants need an Airboarding lesson from Canaan, which also allows you to go Airboarding the rest of the season, according to Lisa Ratliffe, resort spokeswoman. “If you need a lesson on race day, you can get a lesson, rental, lift ticket, and the competition entry for $50. If you already have your Airboard license, the fee is $45 for rental, lift ticket, and entry fee.” Race registration is now open.
Overall winner receives an electric green Airboard 130-X. This will be the first 130-X in existence in America. Other prizes include Gath helmets, GoPro wide-angle helmet cams, unbreakable sunglasses from Numa Sport Optics, 661 pads and carbon knuckle Airboarding gloves, Nuun active hydration, and more.
Canaan Valley Resort is located in Davis and managed by Guest Services. Davis was ranked one of the top 10 ski towns in the nation by Men’s Journal in 2005. For additional information or reservations, contact Canaan Valley Resort at 800-622-4121 or visit the resort Web site at www.canaanresort.com.
