After a long week in the stand (spending 11 hours a day in the blind) we make it to Saturday without a buck. Everyone in camp except Pam and two other guys had filled their tags and headed back to Saskatoon.

Once again we leave the lodge way before light and get to our stand and have about a 45 minute wait for sunrise. We have gone from the coldest day of the week on Friday and now Saturday is the warmest day of the week warming up into the low 30s.

AS the day passes we see several small bucks, one even made a scrape less than 30 yards from our stand.

At 3:00 I looked at Pam and her husband (Brian) and tell them, “I’m out of filming light!” They knew I was joking, but my mind was about fried. We had logged over 62 hours in the stand so far that week and we still had 2 1/2 hours before dark.

The rest of the afternoon passed by uneventful until the last 5 minutes of the hunt when Brian starts saying, “DEER, DEER, DEER!”

He followed that quickly with, ” Shoot it, Shoot it, Shoot it!”

I was scrambling to get the camera on the deer and in focus and thank God Pam waited for me to give the O.K. to shoot it. Once I got the deer in focus I gave Pam the “All Clear” and she dropped the hammer on this heavy racked Saskatchewan buck!

We are half way through our Saskatchewan Whitetail Hunt. The first day was a little slow. We only saw one deer.

Tuesday was a better day. We saw a total of 13 deer and several young bucks.

Today, Wednesday, has been the best day of the hunt. It started out with lows in the low teens and it snowed most of the day. The highs only reached the low 20s. Deer movement was good again. We saw 12 deer and several potential bucks. Nothing that just “tripped our trigger” just yet though!

Tomorrow is supposed to be cold with a low of 7 degrees and a high of 15 degrees. We are hoping for some good movement and maybe we will see “The One”! The hunter that was hunting 3/4 of a mile from us today shot a 160 class whitetail at 4 o’clock this afternoon. He said he saw some good action today and a couple of bucks chasing does. I hope one of the big boys come by our stand looking for love!!!!

HERE IS A PICTURE FROM OUR GROUND BLIND OF THE AREA WE ARE HUNTING

I’m in Northern Saskatchewan with Pam Zaitz and she is hunting with Jim Shockey’s Canadian Whitetail Adventures. Late this afternoon Pam sighted in her rifle and it only took one shot from her Thompson Center Encore and she hit the target dead CENTER!!!!!

We start our hunt in the morning and I have a good feeling about this hunt. We are coming off a full moon and the weather was warm last week. The weather has cooled off to the mid 20s for highs and the bucks are just starting to chase up here. Hopefully we are going to hit the rut perfect!

Well my streak has come to an end in Saskatchewan. I’ve been having an awesome year and knew I would come back empty handed sooner or later. In all it was a long, very cold week. We were hunting near Pierceland, Saskatchewan and we saw plenty of deer. The problem was that they had a large winter kill last year and the deer we were seeing were 2 & 3 year old deer. My hunter was looking for a mature buck.

We had 2 mature bucks show up this week. One came up beside our blind and stopped behind some brush not giving us a shot and the other was a giant 8 pointer that had half of his right main beam broke off.

The best part about the trip is that for the first time in about 3 years I got to share hunt camp with my best friend and fellow videographer Chris Douglas. We put in some long, cold hours but we managed to get in a movie every night trying to wind down. Needless to say we only got about 3 1/2 to 4 hours of sleep a night! By the way, Congrats Chris and getting that fine harvest on film the last day of the hunt!!!!! Boy did we work hard on this hunt!

The worst part of the trip was an hour drive by 4-wheeler (Quad in Canada) to the stand every morning. The warmest morning it was -4 F and the coldest morning was -27 F. Boy do those people have long, cold winters up there. The funny thing is that when I got back to Raleigh Saturday it was 69 degrees. I went through a 96 degree temperature change within 12 hours. Now that’s crazy!

The following are a few photos from the trip:

The Camper Chris & I stayed in

Chris & I the last night of the hunt, Can you see the joy in our face!!!!!!!!

All of the hunters in camp shot except us. Here are a couple of bucks from the hunt!
