I havn’t killed many deer just one a a big doe.
i was hunting the ground and she slowly started making he way towards me. She got as close as 10 yards staring and started doing the old head bobbing or pick-a-boo game with me. My heart was jumping out of my chest she was so close i could actually smell the musk of the animal. but the thing i remember most is whe she turned away and gave me a perfect quartering away shot. i was at full draw…and my right leg started shaking just my right leg and all i could think about was… ELVIS PRESLEY and the way he yused to shake his legs in concert..don’t ask me why cause till this day i can’t explain it..i’m not even a fan..but at that moment it was ME the DOE, ELVIS..and the song “DON’T BE CRUEL”…AND I WASN’T cause i made a perfect shot and she dropped no more than 15 yards from where she was hit…
My first deer was a doe. I was sitting on the edge of a swamp in a home made deer stand. The year was 1996 and I was carrying a Remington 20 gauge Wingmaster with 6 ready and waiting slugs. When I first noticed the doe, she was standing broadside at 20 or so yards browsing on a small sappling. I was so nervous I dont really remembering emptying the old Remington or if I had even aimed the shotgun. But a few hours later me and my Grandpa were carrring the doe out on a makeshift deer cart. I’ll never forget that cool December day or the man that I loved so much.

Wow… its been 20 years this year that i shot my first deer. i was 12 years old and hunting with a single shot 20 ga. that my grandpa had given me. it wasnt much, but man to a 12 year old boy it was. the season had started off the 2nd saturday of November back in 1988 and boy was it cold. my best friend and i had been planning this day for months. that morning his dad walked me to my stand. it was called the old Elm stand. obviously because it was built in an old elm tree. this stand had produced many many deer and was the preferred stand to hunt in that field. he was certain that i would have my first deer at first light.
Just as he told me this doe came down this trail right at first light and i let her have it. Boom blasted the old single barrel, and she stumbled and ran off. being only 12 a few minutes seemed like hours and i had to get down to claim my deer. when i started to follow the blood trail i jumped her up and she ran across the field and right under my friends stand and he finished her off.
Oh how i was upset. (we had a rule back in those days that if your first shot wasnt a fatal one then whoever did it under claimed the deer.) as the rest of the weekend went on i didnt get another chance at anymore deer. the following weekend came and there was snow in the forcast! we all know that a good 6 inches of snow really get the deer moving. i remember gettin up really early and heading out with my friend and going to our stands. man was it frezing!! the wind was whiping and the snow was flying. at about 8:15 my buddy showed up at my stand and we went back to the house to get warmed up. after about 30 minutes or so we headed back to our stands. I remember sitting there and it had quit snowing and the wind had died down, and i was singing to myself in my mind the signs song. (Signs,signs everywhere theres signs, rocking and rolling and breakin my mind.do this dont do that cant you read the signs!) and here they came 4 does over top the hill from across the road from a swap. they got with in 60 yards and i again let it fly, this time hitting her right in the lungs and down she went. I quickly got out of my stand and ran up to her, she tried to get up and i shot her one more time in the head. i wasnt gonna loose another one!!! I was so happy! i had done it, i had killed my first deer. it was like an addiction. i havent missed a season since and now i am trying to turn my love of whitetail hunting a living.

My first bowhunt was October 7, 1993 at Yellowstone State Public Hunting Grounds. Back then I hunted with a Darton 50MX compound shooting “fingers”. My husband Mark and I pitched a tent in Yellowstone’s campgrounds and bowhunted six days fighting off the black flies. I was set up on a ridge that was above the Yellowstone River. The acorns were falling like crazy and the deer sign was excellent. My treestand was set up about 15-20 yards away from a great deer run with nice intersections. I hunted morning and evening not seeing a thing…THEN….Thurs morn….. 8:00 a.m…. I saw movement …it was a deer! I drew back, aimed, (so I thought) and hit the deer right in the neck about four inches in back of where the head and neck meet. The button buck fell down right in its tracks making these god-awful groans. I had mixed emotions at the time..ecstatic because I harvested my very first deer and sad ..actually crying, because the deer was struggling. After watching the deer perish, I got down from my treestand ..walked up to the deer and realized that if he had rolled ten yards further away from my stand, he would of tumbled down a 100 foot cliff to the river below! When I settled down, after cheering on the top of my lungs, I walked two miles back to camp to get Mark!
From then on bowhunting for Whitetails was in my blood!
I can remember my first bear hunt like it was yesterday. I was so excited, yet nervous because I didn’t know what to expect from a big black bear. My friend who set up our bait took me to the stand earlier in the day to show me exactly what to expect. That evening I set out for the blind to hopefully have an opportunity to take a bear. After about an hour of sitting in the blind I saw a little bear come into the bait. Now this was the first bear I had ever seen in the wild, so I immediatly got excited. But I was told not to shoot a small bear. My friend said that I would see a small one first, then I should get ready, because it wouldn’t be long until the big one came in. After about a half hour I noticed the small bear look over his shoulder and then bolt away like lightning. Sure enough, here come the big boy! My heart about lept out of my throat. Since I was on the edge of a thick dense swamp, I was told to shoot right behind the head in the neck. No one wanted to track a bear through the thicket, so I waited for the perfect opportunity and placed my shot with my rifle. Down he went! But he didn’t die. He was paralyzed from the front shoulders down. He laid on the ground and gave the death growl and roar! The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. I could hear him snapping his jaws together like a steel trap! I could see him raise his head up and then it would fall behind a small rise on the ground. I tried to place a shot on him when he would raise up but both times just as I shot he dropped his head. I had only taken 4 cartridges with me for my 30-06 that afternoon, so I now had only one shell left. I then looked to my left and I saw what appeared to be large black bowling balls rolling along the ground. It was 4 black bear cubs and their momma bear! They were only about 10 yards away and by now it was starting to get dark. I watched them go just out of sight and then I heard them all climb up a tree. It was then that I knew I was in trouble. So I slid out of the blind and headed for camp before it got dark. I gathered up the troops and headed back with more ammo and backup help. When we arrived back at the blind, the big boy was still there and I got close enough to take the shot to put him down. I was so excited that I had taken my first Michigan Black Bear! He now has a resting place on my wall in the game room. The tale of the tape was 6’6″ and about 275 – 300 pounds. It was a hunt that I will never forget.
I was preparing for my first ever deer season in Iowa back in the winter 1993.It was the fourth of December and 3 and 1/2 months had past since we turned in our applications for our resident deer tags. I was so excited. As each day approached the anxiety grew to an all time high. The night before the season opener thoughts of bobbing tails rushed through my head as I lied awake tossing and turning anxious for Saturday not knowing quite what to expect. Finally sometime late in the night I drifted off asleep. As my alarm went off at 5 am I hopped out of bed to the smell of bacon cooking.After breakfast we dressed for the upcoming day. I was so excited to go deer hunting for the first time that I couldn’t stand it. It was Me, Keith, and his father Herman. Old man Hermans favorite motto was to take the first deer that came to you cause that may be the only opportunity to harvest one.When we got to the 80 acre timber went our seprate ways to set in the stands we had set up. At about ten o’clock I was just about frozen to death when I heard sticks breaking and hooves hitting the ground. At he same time my heart began to race and my body got a chill from the adrenaline running through it. As I turned to watch the doe running accross the hill I heard steps from behind me.I was not going to turn for fear of scaring it off. All of the sudden I heard the loudest “BOOM” I ever heard in the woods. I am not kidding I just about jumped out of my coveralls.My friend Keith had just shot a spiked buck not more than 75 yards behind me.I was so dissapointed as I sat there not getting an opportunity to shoot.The rest of the day we didn’t see another deer. We arrose Sunday to the beat of the same drum. The deer seemed as if they had dissappeared off the face of the earth. I had to work at the local resteraunt Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday the last day of the season and would be my last opportunity to to harvest a deer. By this time I did not care if I harvested a buck , doe, or yearling.I just wanted to fill my tag and get some meat for the freezer.About 3:30 Wednesday night the last day of the season I sat atop a hill of great big oaks thinking this would be the spot.I could see forever.As I sat there darkness kept creeping up on me. Not seeing anything but a few grey squirrels all afternoon.At about 4:50 I looked a couple hundred yards down the hill and seen 2 deer running for their lives.Being out of range I held up from shooting for fear I would just push them away further.As the deer ran out of sight I began to get more and more dissapointed knowing that it was an entire year till I could do this again.I only had about 15 minutes of legal light left. I was sitting there focused on my thoughts when about bout 5 minutes later I heard shots from other hunters several hundred yards away in the next timber.I figured they must have shot at the deer I had just seen.As my heart sank for the second time I heard heavy steps coming right at me. I raised my gun slightly just incase. As I was scanning the timber floor I seen a deer running right at me full bore.As he got to about 15 yards away I raised my shotgun up, aimed, popped the safety off and squeezed the trigger. All of the sudden the deer hit the deck.I was totally estatic. Jumping up and down. What a rush I thought.My first deer ended up being a yearling.But I tell you, he had some of the best meat from a deer that I had ever had in my life.

Actually i do remember my first hunt opening day of gun season im sitting in my stand and im looking at two does and there looking at me or so i thought, so im looking around and i see this black snake and i know there not poisonous but this thing was like 12 foot long big around as my leg (must have been eating pretty good) and it was trying to come up in the tree i was sitting in, well i really didn’t want to share my stand with this snake but i didn’t want to give myself away either, so im leaning over my stand looking down at the snake who’s about half way up this tree 1/2 on my stand about 3 ft from my feet and im trying to spit on his head maybe trying to get him to turn around well it didn’t work he just kept coming so i just sat real still and he eventually got all the way up into my stand with me he just kinda pause sniffed me and scurried back down my stand and this whole time these 2 doe were stomping and snorten it was a very tense moment needless to say i wasn’t worth much after that i just kinda sat there wondering what that was all about and never did see a buck! but them 2 doe just kinda hung around and that was the end of my weekend. Then i saw my buck as i was in my truck going home there he was standing on the side of the road a 10 pt i think he was laughing at me but im not sure…lol
