OK, so this is the Hog Blog!  But that’s not all I hunt.  A few years ago, I got introduced to the annual springtime madness that is turkey hunting.  My life has not been the same since then.  Nor has my wallet.

Anyway, I was out riding my horse around a nearby ranch on Friday when I came across the following scene.

Jake outside the fence

This jake turkey got separated from the rest of the flock on opposite sides of a deer fence.  Only 30 yards away, there’s a huge, open gate, but the turkey couldn’t seem to figure that out.  Instead, he ran up and down the fenceline.  As I watched, the flock came back and one of the other jakes started cutting at the lost bird.  Suddenly they flared up, and a fight ensued.

Fighting Turkeys

It was cool to watch.  But even cooler was the fact that this behavior is breaking out all over the place.

By the way, I shot a little bit of video of the fight and put it up on the Skinny Moose video sharing site.  I had some issues embedding it in this post, but you can find it here.

The toms are gobbling and strutting.  The hens are starting to purr and tease.  And it’s less than a month until turkey opener!  I’ll be out with my bow in hand on opening morning.  Where will you be?
