Well, the lead-ammo ban groundswell is picking up momentum.

Fort Hunter Liggett and Camp Roberts are two military bases that open to the public for hunting opportunities.  Both are great spots for CA hunters, and offer some of the best opportunities for public land hogs that you’ll get around here.

In an announcement mailed to permit holders, Fort Hunter Liggett announced that, beginning in July of 2007, all hunters using centerfire ammo will have use non-lead bullets (e.g. Barnes).  I haven’t seen the announcement myself, so I don’t have the precise wording.

Camp Roberts also made a similar decision.  Read their alert on the Camp Roberts website.  According to this notice, centerfire rifles will be restricted to non-lead bullets as of July 1, and shotgunners will have to be lead-free in July of 2008.

There’s no mention in either of these alerts of rimfire ammunition, so not sure what the future holds for varmint shooters at this time.  There’s not a lot of varmint hunting on Camp Roberts, although there are some squirrels on parts of the camp.  FHL does have some varmint shooting.

I’m hoping to hear back from Winchester regarding their new ETipT bullets.  As soon as I do, I’ll pass the word along to you all.
