There’s a monkey on my back.
No, it’s not heroin, cocaine, or anything like that. It’s hunting, and I’m “jonesing” for a fix. I’ve been reading some posts over at Jesse’s Hunting and Outdoors from folks in Hawaii and Texas where they’re just slaying the hogs right now. I’m itching to go hunt, and getting out in the paradise of Hawaii…well that’s just too much to ask right now.
Some of my neighbors here in CA have had a bit of success lately as well… particularly Deedy, down at Bryson Hesperia Resort. Deedy has been guiding a lot of folks to hogs, even in the teeth of an extremely dry and hot summer. If all goes well and the creek don’t rise, I’ll be down there in October to bloody my new rifle (more on that soon).
To make matters worse, as I’ve mentioned, the CA early archery season opens this coming weekend, and I’ve got obligations that will keep me out of the woods the whole weekend. I have a handful of good friends and hunting buddies who’ll be out there, though, and it’s gonna chafe me all weekend knowing one of them will probably take the first legal buck of the 2007-2008 hunting season.
Anyway, my broadheads are sharpened and the recurve is strung. Next Friday evening will find me making camp up in Sonoma County in hopes of putting some fresh venison in my freezer early, so I can focus on adding to my pork supply.
Are we there yet?
