Ohio and Michigan are even in the same general vicinity. So you weren't off by that much.

Ahh.. Ohio, Michigan... it's all the same continent anyway (isn't it?). Sorry 'bout that. I forget who's where sometimes.

Anyway, thanks for the comments all. You guys are right, by the way... the hunt was a great experience, meat or no meat. I've never been to any place as awesome as Colorado in the fall. Just seeing the aspens turn, and watching the moon rise over the peaks is enough to fill my soul for a lifetime...and I'm lucky enough to get to go back again and again to get more.

We do have Elk here. I have never tried to pull a tag though. I'm always too busy chasing deer and turkey. Would be very cool to shoot one with my bow though.

Great story. I love the honest approach to it. A hunt is always great even if nothing is brought home!

Kristine got it right...I'm in Ohio - no wild Elk here. Still nice to live vicariously through your story!

What a wonderful story! Sometimes the best stories come from the guys who don't have full freezers. I really enjoyed this story. This is the first year in 7 that I am not out chasing elk and I am jealous big time!

Dangit,

You mean the "here elkie elkie elkie" call doesn't work for you either.

That could be the root of my whole problem last week.

Dangit.

Bryan is in Ohio, I think. Arthur and I are in Michigan.

We do have elk in Michigan. I was hoping to see one, or a moose last time I was in the U.P., but they didn't come when I called. I really don't understand it. I thought for sure calling "Here moosey, moosey" and "Here elky, elky" would bring them right in. Guess they were just being stubborn.

Thanks all,

Kristine, it was definitely a great time. Despite the little setback witht he guide, Rick's operation is top-notch. The lodge is situated right at the edge of great hunting, so we always had time for a hot breakfast before heading out to start hunting in the morning... although if the elk are further afield, he'll set up drop-camps too.

The food is also great, homestyle and home-cooked by Rick and his wife, Lavonne with an able assist by Lavonne's dad, John. Every morning is a hot and hearty breakfast, complete with juice and coffee. Lunch is a bagged lunch, since we're almost always in the field all day, then a hot supper is waiting for everyone at the end of the day... kept hot for the latecomers as needed. With dinner, there was also always a homemade dessert... we burned a lot of calories out there, and it's a good thing because I could easily gain 10 pounds in a week there.

Bryan, you guys have elk in Michigan don't you? Go get 'em!
