I kinda knew it all along, but according to a report I just heard on the radio today, January 21, is supposedly the day that more people succumb to the doldrums than any other day of the calendar year. There are several likely reasons, including the fact this this is approaching mid-winter, when the days have been short for too long. Also, the holidays are pretty much gone, and there’s little else on the horizon. New Year’s resolutions have fallen by the wayside for most people, and the credit card bills for Christmas are coming due.
Whatever the reason, what’s an outdoorsman to do?
Well, back in NC, about now I’d be climbing the walls myself. Of course, there’s still a little waterfowling to do, and small game would still be in season… but it’s almost over, with nothing but waiting to hold over until the water warms enough to do some offshore fishing.
Here in CA, it’s not so bad. I’ve got hog hunting to hold me through the winter time, and that’s a pretty good bonus.
But what about the rest of you? What better way to break up the blues than by planning a trip? I received an email that almost went in the SPAM bin the other day, from someone at this “Travel hacker” blog. I almost ignored it, but at the last minute I clicked. 25 “Ultimate” Vacations for Sportsmen is what it advertised. “Really?” I thought.
But a quick read told me, “hey, why not? Share it with the gang.”
So I did… but remember… caveat emptor!

I do so very much miss, terribly, the public land hunting which I used to do a few years back!
The activity which I would be persuing right now would be “Bear hunting” somewhere up in our beautiful and picturesque northern California forests.
The bite of a cool brisk breeze, the crunch of white, new snow beneath my boots and ahh! the sound of ol’ brother bruin desperately digging out a fresh winter den and me sneakin’ up to take a peek to see if he is harvestable.
