Wow! There are a lot of things going on these days that make me furrow my brow, frown, or generally displease me. Some of them make me angry, some of them disappoint, but some of them really make me kind of sad. The recent news from Outdoor Life magazine falls into that latter category.
In the last issue I received, they announced the retirement of long-time fishing editor, Jerry Gibbs, and shooting editor, Jim Carmichel. This was a shocker, because they’ve both been part of my hook-n-bullet reading since I was a kid. I never really thought of either of those guys as getting older, but when I read the announcement I realized that they probably weren’t spring chickens any more.
But then I got the news today that the magazine is letting Patrick McManus go, citing budgetary reasons as the main excuse. Now I know everyone doesn’t read Outdoor Life or Field and Stream, but those two magazines have been a staple for me since I can remember. And for that entire time, Patrick McManus’s humor has graced the back pages of one or the other of those magazines (12 years at F&S before switching to OL for 28 years). That just makes me sad.
Of course, McManus is something like 71 years old, and probably ready to kick back and forget about deadlines and editors for a while. He’s still got his books, and I hope he’ll turn out a few more before he hangs up his typewriter. He also has a blog, and in it lets his humor shine through…albeit in smaller doses than his monthly column. I know I’ll be reading him as long as he keeps writing.
Anyway, his column will be missed. Most months, it was my favorite part of the magazine… hell, sometimes it’s the only thing I read. This is, truly, the end of an era.
The decline of print publications has long been heralded, but I think these changes at Outdoor Life are an indication that the fall has begun in earnest.

I’ve always enjoyed Patrick McManus’ work and have read several of his books. It’s too bad he’s leaving the magazine but I’m not surprised. A lot of the mags, and blogging networks as well, are cutting back on staff and sometimes on issues. Guess everyone is tightening their belts.
