Hey Josh, if I hadn't seen what I did down at Native Hunt this past weekend, I wouldn't believe it either. It seems awful early for that kind of behavior, but there's no mistaking the telltale signs. Everything from a heavily established "rub line" in Spork's territory to bucks (the Sultan) sniffing the does' backsides and herding them together in his little harem. The smaller forky that's with them now will probably be run off before long.

Josh: We won't lose Hank to anyplace where wine grapes can't be grown.

B Zone is some pretty country.

Are we going to lose Hank to the Northwest corner of our fair state?

I posted on Hank's blog, but I wanted to note here that I was at first a bit skeptical of the rut appearing so early, but after your explanation of it, I'm sold. Up where I was bowhunting this weekend (above Placerville), I saw leaves still on the buckeyes and poison oak, something I haven't seen in a long time. This cool(ish) weather has everything on different clocks.

Thanks all.

Holly, hunt long enough (especially with me), and you're guaranteed to find yourself in one of those hell holes. The nature of hunting in this country. But when you get out, the rewards are much greater than you expect... usually.

Michael, we wish you could've been there too. You were missed around the campfire, and in the field.

Hank... B zone for almost sure. Just gotta figure out when I can break loose, but October looks fairly open right now.

And Suzee, thanks to you for your comments, and for dropping by. I've been in the bottom of too many of these CA canyons, but I seem to keep on doing it. Some folks call me crazy, but I'm just having fun. And it does seem like the more you sweated and bled over something, the more valued the memory tends to be.

I read both of your stories and appreciated the honesty of you both... and I can relate to the effort to recover your deer...sometimes it makes a person question their sanity when you are packing an animal out of a bottomless canyon... but it seems to make the memory of the hunt just a little more special!Very nice video!... that country just looks amazing... and dislpays spectacular sunrise and sunsets.

Nice video, Phillip! It adds one more bit to the Legend of Spork! Interesting to have us both tell the tale independently - we each focus on different things.

B Zone blacktail next?

Awesome. I would never hope for a hunt this hard, but it's a hunt Hank will remember forever. And honestly, I think Spork is gonna taste pretty damned good.
