… some of my friends were actually killing hogs.

At least that’s the case as evidenced by this email I got from my friend, Scott. He and our buddy Chris went down to Camp Roberts for the weekend, and it sounds like they had a great time! Here’s Scott’s short, but exciting email:

It was a good trip, we were in the hogs most of the time we were in the field. I got this one Sunday morning and should have shot another that was with it, but I’ve been hunting Tejon so long, I forgot you can shoot two hogs. By the time I remembered, it was too late.

I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to me! Heading down to Florida in a few weeks to stalk pigs in the orange groves. I’ll be trying to stick one with my bow while the crew I’m heading down with will be slinging lead. We’ll see how long I can hold out.

Good luck in Florida! That’s one state I really want to hunt, but it just hasn’t worked out yet.

I’ve seen an awful lot of guys try to stick to archery when their buddies are all using rifles, and it’s a hard row to hoe. It happens every year at our Tejon Ranch hunts. It takes about a half day before the bow goes in the case and the rifle comes out. But the guys who stand tough always end up with the best stories.

The 20 gauge H&R Ultra Slugger will be in the truck waiting for me.

Phil, I’m starting my search for a new bow. I’ve got a hand-me-down Darton that shoots well, but itsn’t really suited for me. Can’t complain b/c it was free. I’m big on spot and stalk — and will sit in a stand. So I’m going to need a bow that is suited for both. I heading to a couple local bow shops to try out as many models as possible. What do you shoot, and do you have recommendations?

Heya C-Rig.

I shoot a Mathews Drenalin, and I really like it a lot. I’m not the most experienced when it comes to compound bows, but before I bought this one I went to a shop that allowed me to try out several different brands and models. The Mathews just seemed to fit and feel the best in my hands, and I shoot it very well.

I think that’s the very best way to pick your next bow. In general, modern compounds are all high-quality tools, and they’ll definitely all get the job done so it’s going to come down to personal choice. Get out and shoot several and see which one feels the best to you… just like choosing a new gun (although I think it’s even more important with a bow). While I love my Mathews, I know plenty of guys who say they can’t get one to shoot for them. It’s all about fit and comfort, I think.
