OK, so it’s a never-ending search for the ultimate hog rifle. Never let anyone tell you that, “all you need is a plain-jane 30-06.”
Nope, there’s always got to be a little something more. So imagine my pleasure when I was fooling around over at the Gun Nut blog and saw this beauty! A 2-bore, blackpowder rifle! Hell, just the recoil would take down a small hog.
Hog rifle??? No way: that’s going to be my new rabbit and squirrel gun! LOL.
…It doesn’t even look fun to shoot, Phillip. Shot a friend’s .416 Rigby side-by-side he was taking to Africa and it wasn’t fun at all: too much cartridge and not enough gun.

Ah, kids and their toys. I once found a great video of a guy shooting a 30-06 pistol and losing his grip during the shot.

It’s a scary thought to be shooting a 1/2 lb ball of lead (1.35″ diameter). It doesn’t take a physics professor to realize that the simple displacement of that much lead and powder is gonna push back REAL hard… despite the fact that the rifle itself weights 22 lbs!
I’ve shot several REALLY big guns, but never anything close to the 2-bore.

Some idiot will make a handgun in this caliber, you just wait and see ! I wouldn’t fire that rifle unless it was attached to a truck !

ive capped one with a 270 winchester and its easier on the shoulder.less kick and good range.
It does seem to have quite a kick, as you might expect from a gun that fires a half-pound ball.
As far as what it takes for a hog, of course most modern centerfires are plenty capable.

Hi Phillp- I’m looking into getting a H&R, 45-70 govt. soon. I figured that be better hog medicine than a plane jane 3006 as you call it.You ought have fun shooting that black powder rifle.
Rick, that 45-70 is quite a cannon, especially if you load it up with hot loads (the factory ammo is kind of light… designed for safety in the 19th century rifles). Cor-Bon makes a good load if you don’t handload.
