I spent the morning with my taxidermist picking up a fish my daughter had caught this summer. While I was there he explained an old technique for goose hunting. It was called “Tolling” and he went on to explain how it is done. I for one have never herd of it before, but it sounds exciting.
What you need first is a water dog, people who do this regularly use a Nova Scotian Tolling dog. You need to be hid well in a waterfowl blind or set up of some sort. Then when you see a flock of geese across the way but won’t come into your spread, take a stick or bumper for training dogs and throw it into the shallow water in front of your blind. The geese will see the dog bounding into the water and retrieving the thrown object. The dog should then bring the object back to you into the cover. The geese will wonder what all the splashing and excitement was all about and then swim over to inspect the situation. When they reach the spread attack! Jump up and flush them and lower the boom on the unsuspecting geese!
I couldn’t believe what he was telling me so I jumped on the internet and searched it out! Low and behold it is an actual tactic that hunters use to take geese with. Has anyone else herd of this or tried this technique before? If so let us know how it worked for you.
