Hello it’s me, Tim, again filling in for Mike while he is out in Colorado. With the youth hunt coming up I have been hearing a lot of people complaining about it. This mentality just blows me away. The argument that I hear is that having the kids out there before bow season starts gets the deer all spooked and ruins the hunt for bow season. Well in all honesty how many youths are actually out there “spooking” the deer? I don’t know that exact number but I have to believe that it is not that high of a number. So I really can’t believe that they are spooking that many deer. Another argument is that the youths will be shooting the big bucks. Sure some of the youth will get a big buck but I would bet that most youths will probably shoot the first deer that they get a chance to and be very happy about it. I also hear the argument that it is giving the kids an unrealistic idea of deer hunting by having their own season. Well I don’t see that being the case. Don’t the kids still have to sit out in the woods and wait for a deer to come if one comes? Don’t they still have to make the shot if a deer does come close enough? Personally I think that the youth hunt is a great idea. What a great way to introduce a youth to deer hunting and to be mentored and taught by a more experienced hunter. Also if it gets a youth hooked on deer hunting then odds are that youth will be a hunter for the rest of his or her live and we have one more hunter to add to our ranks. We need all of the new hunters that we can get to help promote our life style. So if you get a chance, take a youth out on the youth hunt this year.
