I received an email from a listener of our podcast “Up North Journal” last night. He mentioned something that I think we could all learn from.
He had commented on how this last week when he was out in the field squirrel hunting that he heard some goose hunters about a 1000 yards away calling to some geese flying in. He said, that he wouldn’t shoot at a squirrel while they were calling the geese, so that he wouldn’t scare off the geese they were after. Now guys that is hunter’s etiquette at its finest!

We all need to remember that when we are out hunting or even fishing that it isn’t just us out there and its not all about us either. We share the great outdoors with other outdoors men and women along with other people in general. Being courteous towards others while in the field will not only make your hunt go better, but it will go a long ways at helping the opinions that are being formed about us hunters!

I recently wrote about a friend out east that had his hunt ruined by a family running a dog in a wildlife area during hunting season. He scared the family when they saw him coming out of the brush. He later met them in the parking lot and informed them politely that it was hunting season and they should be more careful. He even took the time to explain his hunting to them along with how they might want to wear orange when walking out in the woods. They thanked him and I think he made a good impression on them as well.

Too many times we think of only ourselves and we have to remember the outdoors is for everyone. So when your out in the field hunting, take the time to know exactly what other hunting seasons are currently going on so you can be aware of what you might encounter. It will make your next time in the field more enjoyable if your not caught by surprise when you see someone else hunting for something different. Good luck this season!
