After a quick morning bow hunt today, I had to run over to my taxidermist to drop off a Widgeon Drake that my oldest boy took this weekend. As always the trip to his shop was an experience that left me with more wisdom than what I came with. While there, I always hear the tall tales of the people who have stopped by to drop game off to be worked on as well as some new unique item or story that he has picked up since the last time I saw him.

Well today was no exception, he brought out two new toys that he has just recently purchased. He showed me two Biakal double barrel rifles! Biakal is a russian made gun for the Remington firearms company. These double barrel rifles were in the .45-70 rifle caliber and the other one was in the .30-06 rifle caliber. They were beautiful pieces that was truly amazing to see. I have never in my life seen a double barrel rifle. He told me they were modeled after the Merkel Nitro Express that are used on African Safaris which sell for over $10,000. These two guns sold for less than a thousand dollars each.

He also showed me how you sight the right side barrel to the iron sights and then underneath between the barrels is a thumb wheel that you can access to adjust the left side barrel to sight it in properly. The trick he said is to figure out what distance you want to sight it in at and then make the adjustments. It will hit the mark at that distance but as you shoot farther out the bullet patterns will cross each other at that distance and then begin to spread apart the further they go past that sight in distance.
What amazed me was how light and balanced they were along with how odd they looked with two rifle barrels on them. The .30-06 was definitely heavier than the .45-70 due to the bore being larger on the .45-70 thus having less metal in it. Both guns had nice checkering on the forearm.
The last thing he told me that shocked me was that he said that these are quite possibly the only two of their kind in the U.S. at this time. I have photos on my cell phone but I can’t get the software to work properly.
Here is an update to this story, I found a similar photo of this model you can see below:
