Fellow Kansas hunter Jeremy Gill sent this story to me this week about a Kansas hunter who shot a 27 point freak nasty deer! It isn’t that unusual to hear about such deer being taken, but what makes this story different is the fact that the deer was a DOE! Yes you heard me right, a doe.
According to the story in the Wichita Eagle, Mike Smith thought he took the buck of a lifetime, that was until further inspection. He began to admire his harvest and then started to do the nasty part of the job. When he flipped the deer over to field dress it he noticed that part of the anatomy was missing! It was then he knew he had a true trophy! This might possibly be the world record for an antlered doe, it scored green at 179 inches and was still in velvet!
Tom Bowman a retired Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks biologist and Boone and Crockett scorer told reporters that does often maintain their velvet throughout the season and keep their antlers throughout the year. This would explain why this one grew so large. Smith took the doe on the opening day of the Kansas rifle hunting season on December 3rd.
Fellow blogger Camo Girl of Skinny Moose Media also wrote a story on this buck or is a doe, you can read her story on it here.
