Courtney Williams, a 13 year old from Michigan, will soon be the record holder for the biggest elk taken in the state of Michigan. On Tuesday December 23, 2008 she was hunting in Cheboygan County with her father when she took a bull elk.
They sat near a picked cornfield on the advice by the landowner who had seen the elk the previous night. Once daylight broke they saw the elk coming towards them, but she couldn’t get a clear shot at the bull. It finally turned after a 25 minute wait by Courtney, along with her father and guide. When it did she fired her .308 at the bull but it didn’t go down, after a second shot the bull was still standing. It took a third shot to bring down the big bull, and it was then that she realized what she had.
Upon approaching the animal, they could see it was indeed a huge bull, which turned out to be an amazing 8 x 7 with a green score of 383 inches! The current and soon to be old record in Michigan is 349 1/4 inches. After the mandatory drying time of 60 days is over it is expected to loose 10 inches, but will still shatter the Michigan record by more than 20 inches! It dressed out at 640 lbs. “I couldn’t believe how big it was”, she said. For the complete story check out the Cheboygan Daily Tribune.
