This weekend I found out about a local ice fishing tournament on our home lake.  This little get together had a 1st place prize of $500 for the longest fish!  I was totally amazed that something so small and unadvertised had such a huge pot.  Second place took home $150 and third was $50!  Not bad for a group of about 53 fisherman!  The local event was held on Lake Fenton in Michigan which is in Genesee County.  I grew up on this lake and have in the past fished it many times.  Lately though it has been pretty tough fishing, I don’t know if it is due to over fishing or just the amount of activity now on the lake.

But on this day it wasn’t about the fish caught as much as it was about the friendships made and strengthened.  The organizer of the event Dave Polidan, provided all you could eat chili and hotdogs for an entry fee of $15 for the tournament and food.  There was only two fish caught during the four hour tournament and two additional fish were caught after the 4pm deadline.  All who were in attendence seemed not to mind about the lack of fish, on this day it was more about being on the ice with friends.  It even looked as if the kids didn’t mind not catching fish, since they were all running around having fun.

If your looking for something to do the third weekend in February, Dave and his group will be putting on another ice tournament at the same location and prizes will be determined upon the number of fisherman entered.  Be sure to check out the video below for all the days action and fun.
