The first day of the North Carolina turkey season has turned tragic for one family. Saturday morning 77 year old Clyde Coffey was shot and killed by North Carolina Wild Life Officer Mark Minton according to a report from WXII-TV. The shooting took place around 7:30am this Saturday, which was the first day of the turkey season, near the community of McGrady about 10 miles from North Wilkesboro. Officer Minton was on patrol when the shooting took place on the victims property according to family members. Coffey was hunting on his property, when there was a confrontation between Coffey and Officer Minton that led to the shooting, according to a North Carolina Wildlife official.
Officials state that the preliminary investigation shows that the officer shot in self defense after the confrontation. The case has been turned over to State Bureau of Investigation agents and Officer Minton has been placed on administrative leave.
