The Hunter Education staff worked with game wardens, partner groups and volunteers to host the fifth Annual Texas-National Archery in the Schools Program State Scholarship Championship in Waco last Friday. A total of 805 students representing more than 30 schools were registered for the tournament. Official results will be presented in a news release still to come. The yearly event is held for schools statewide that participate in the NASP program, one of TPWD’s most popular and fastest-growing efforts to bring shooting sports and the outdoor tradition into schools. Students from kindergarten to 12th grade compete in the event, and only schools that teach archery as part of the in-school curriculum are allowed to participate. School teachers and administrators like the NASP program for several reasons, partly because it allows kids of all kinds to take part, regardless of body shape or athletic ability, and it teaches safety and builds self-esteem. The event was sponsored by the Texas-National Archery in Schools Program and Texas Hunter Education Instructor’s Association.
