Reported by Milt Inman

This morning the call came over the Fire Net Radio, “A boat upside down in the water and a person in the water beside it”. The call went out to the Volunteer Fire Departments in three small towns near South Pond – Bethel, Greenwood and Woodstock. One town had a Rescue Boat, another town had Cold Water Rescue Suits and the third was manpower-trained to go in ice cold water safely and pull the person into the boat and start treatment for hypothermia as soon as possible.

The ice cover on the lake melted only a few day ago leaving the water at 32 degrees F. A person dies in a very short time in water that cold.

After a search of a few hours, no sign of a person or boat was found. The Maine Warden Service called it a false alarm.

The volunteer firemen took all of their equipment back to the fire barn, cleaned it and put it away ready for the next call. Then they go back to work at their regular jobs.
